Secretary Benson delivers Wayne County Community College District commencement address

DETROIT, Mich. – Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson delivered the 2023 Wayne County Community College District (WCCD) commencement address at a ceremony today at Ford Field. More than 1,200 graduates of the Class of 2023 received degrees among their friends and family, WCCD Chancellor Dr. Curtis L. Ivery, students, faculty, and staff.

Benson spoke to the graduates about making choices that help them build lives of meaning, purpose, courage, and strength.

“Despite all that you cannot control, you each have the power to respond to life’s uncertainties with actions and choices that reflect who you are, who you want to be and help build the world – the community, the state, the family – you wish to inhabit,” Secretary Benson said. “No matter what happens next, you have that power. The power to choose courage instead of fear.  Integrity instead of the convenience of the moment. Truth over lies.  Discomfort over ease. Perseverance over retreat. Resilience over surrender.”

“So, I encourage you to respond to this moment with courage, truth, discomfort, grace and resilience and choose to keep going in service of who you are, the rights you stand for, the freedoms you fight for, and the democracy we all seek to protect,” said Benson. “One where every vote counts and where every voice is heard. Where equality thrives and justice prevails.”
