Secretary Benson statement on Senate passage of voting rights bills
October 24, 2023
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson today made the following statement regarding Senate passage of HB 4568, lifting Michigan’s ban on hiring transportation for rides to the polls:
“Every Michigander deserves equal access to the ballot. The state’s longstanding ban on hired transportation to the polls unfairly restricted the voting rights of seniors, people with disabilities, young voters, and anyone with transportation challenges.
“Today, the Senate passed important legislation to overturn this discriminatory ban. I’m grateful for the leadership of the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Whitsett, as well as Elections Committee chairs Rep. Tsernoglou and Sen. Moss as we continue to break down barriers and secure everyone’s access to the polls.”
