Secretary Benson issues statement on U.S. Supreme Court's decision in 14th Amendment case

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson today made the following statement regarding the United States Supreme Court’s decision in the 14th amendment case on President Donald Trump’s eligibility on the presidential primary ballot:

"Election officials in Michigan and across the country are fully prepared to hold free, fair, and secure elections with Donald Trump on the ballot. Today’s ruling from the United States Supreme Court gives needed clarity to state officials and courts still wrestling with the question of how to apply Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to Donald Trump’s eligibility as a candidate.

I hope it also gives voters greater clarity of their power to define the future of our nation and our democracy. Because as Justices Sotomayor, Kagan, and Jackson remind us in their concurrence, 'The American people have the power to vote for and elect candidates for national office, and that is a great and glorious thing.'"
