Who May Receive MRS Services?

Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) helps Michigan residents with disabilities achieve employment and self-sufficiency. MRS is part of a network of vocational rehabilitation programs across the U.S. authorized by the federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Each year, thousands of individuals in Michigan with disabilities are assisted into obtaining and maintaining jobs through MRS services. MRS serves people in their communities through offices all across the state staffed by master's degree level rehabilitation counselors.

Who Should Seek MRS Services?

 Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) is for people who need support to prepare for, find, keep, or return to work. You should reach out to MRS if:

• You have a disability that makes working or getting ready to enter the workforce harder. This includes physical, mental, emotional, or learning disabilities.
• You want to work or improve your job opportunities. When you apply, will help you explore careers that match your strengths and interests to help you establish an employment goal.
• You need help to succeed at work. MRS can assist with assessments, counseling, job training, workplace accommodations, and other supports that help you reach your job goals.
• You are legally allowed to work in the United States. This includes U.S. citizens and non‑citizens who have valid work authorization.
• You receive SSI or SSDI due to a disability. If you get Social Security disability benefits and want to work, you are automatically presumed eligible for MRS. Receiving SSI or SSDI is not a requirement to receive MRS services.

Who is Eligible for MRS Services?

MRS is required to make an eligibility determination prior to providing you services. You may be eligible for MRS services if all of the following apply:

• You have a disability. A qualified professional must determine that you have a physical, mental, or learning disability.
• Your disability makes working harder. Your disability must create a “substantial impediment to employment,” meaning it affects your ability to prepare for, get, keep, or advance in a job.
• You require MRS services. You must need vocational rehabilitation services to help you prepare for, find, keep, regain, or advance in a job that fits your strengths and interests.
• You are allowed to work in the United States. You must be a U.S. citizen or a non‑citizen who has valid authorization to work in the U.S.

MRS reviews each application individually. If more information is needed, MRS may request records or assessments before making a final eligibility decision.
