General PSI Information
- The State of Michigan has contracted with PSI Services LLC (PSI) to conduct the Bureau of Construction Codes (BCC) examination program. PSI provides this examination through a network of computer examination centers in Michigan.
- Once your application has been reviewed and you’ve been approved to test, your information is sent to PSI. They should reach out within 10 business days to notify you that you can now pay for your exam and schedule.
- Applications are good for one year from the date of first review. If you do not pass all required exams within the one-year application period, you will need to re-apply and be approved to test again.
- All applications are reviewed in order of receipt. Previously being approved to test does not move your application to the front of the line for review.
- For Electrical Journeymen, Master Electrician, and Sign Specialist applicants:
- You are only allowed TWO (2) failed testing attempts within two (2) years. If you fail twice within two years, you will need to wait a full year from the date of your last failed attempt before reapplying and being approved to take the test again. You will also need to take an approved course and provide proof you’ve taken it with your new application.
- For Residential Builder Salesperson applicants:
- You DO NOT need to be approved first to test. You must take and pass the exam at PSI before submitting your application. Passing test scores are good for one year.
- While PSI schedules and proctors the exams, the exams are created by the professional staff of the Bureau of Construction Codes and are based on the appropriate code, law, and rules governing the trade.

Candidate Information Bulletins (CIBs) may be found on the PSI website. These CIBs include additional information about the exams, scheduling, the testing process, and reference materials for the exam questions.

Exam Accommodations and Alternative Test Delivery Arrangements
Accommodation Requests- Accommodation requests must be made to PSI directly. All PSI examination centers are equipped to provide access per the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and exam accommodations will be made in meeting a candidate’s needs. Requests for accommodation may be made here. Please note: if your application expires and you were unable to pass the exam within the one-year application period, you will need to request accommodation again on the new application.
Language Options- Currently, the only examinations available in both English and Spanish are Individual Residential Builder, Maintenance & Alteration (M&A) Contractor, and Salesperson. You will select the exam in your preferred language while scheduling the exam at PSI.
Delivery Options- At this time, the only exams available online to be taken remotely at home are Plumbing Contractor and Master Plumber. These are also available at PSI Testing Centers. You must select your preferred delivery method while scheduling the exam at PSI.
Q: What Candidate ID do I provide to schedule a Builder Salesperson exam?
A: You can provide your Social Security Number, as you have to take and pass the exam at PSI before applying for the license.

Q: What can I take into the exams at PSI?

Q: How do I request testing accommodations at PSI?
A: You may request testing accommodations at PSI online here. If you go to schedule your exam, you will need to ask for the Accommodations Team, as they are the only ones able to schedule your exam to make sure your accommodations are available.
Q: I requested test accommodation in the past under a different application. Will I have to apply for them again?
A: Yes. Accommodations are specific to each approved application.
Q: Is my exam open book?
A: Please check the specific exam type in the Candidate Information Bulletin to see if your exam is open book and what you are allowed to bring with you.
Q: Can I bring materials with highlights and underlining for an open book exam?
A: No. Reference materials cannot have any highlights, underlining or marking of any type. Materials can only be brought when they appear exactly as published. No markings will be allowed.
Q: My driver’s license is expired. Can I still use that to take my exam at PSI?
A: No. You must have a valid photo ID that is not expired.
Q: How do I see if my PSI Test Center is closed due to weather?
A: You can check https://www.psiexams.com/test-takers/openings/ to see the most recent closings, or call (855)579-4635 to see if your test center is open. While PSI will make attempts to contact you should your testing center be closed, sometimes there may be a delay in an emergency closing situation.
Q: How long do I have to take my exam?

Q: Can I take my exam in a language other than English?
A: At this time, we offer the Individual Residential Builder, Maintenance & Alteration (M&A Contractor) and the Builder Salesperson exams in Spanish. We do not offer exams in any other languages at this time.
