Cannabis Plan Reviews/Inspections
About Cannabis Plan Reviews/Inspections
Back in 2018, Bureau of Fire Services (BFS) became involved in the regulation of medical marihuana facilities through rule R333.234 of the Medical Marihuana Facilities Administrative Rules, Public Act 281 of 2016. In July of 2019, the Cannabis Regulatory Agency issued emergency administrative rules for implementing the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act (MRTMA). MRTMA allows for Adult-Use licensed cannabis facilities and requires BFS to complete plan reviews and field inspections for these facilities. The Rules require BFS to do some plan review and field inspections of all licensed facilities. Plan reviews are performed for all Grow, Processor, Micro-business and Designated Consumption Establishments, for new construction, remodeling of existing buildings, renovations to existing facilities and equipment changes made to currently approved facilities. Field inspections are completed twice a year for all licensed medical or Ault-Use cannabis facilities. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Code 1, 2018 edition is adopted for both the Medical and Adult-Use cannabis facilities. NFPA 1 references NFPA 101 and other important code standards to provide the BFS staff with the resources to ensure life safety in these regulated facilities.
