Mortuary Science License Continuing Education

Continuing Education for Mortuary Science Licensee Renewal

Beginning November 1, 2025, licensees will be required to complete at least four hours of eligible continuing education courses during each license year – October 31 to October 31. Compliance with this requirement must be demonstrated before an individual license may be renewed. Two of the four hours of continuing education hours must be dedicated to embalming and restorative art skills, ethics and best practices, grief counseling, occupational health and safety, transmission of communicable diseases and sterilization techniques, laws relating to the practice of funeral directing, prepaid funeral sales, consumer protection, Federal Trade Commission rules, or fair labor standards.

  • Mortuary Science Licensees starting November 1, 2025, are required to complete continuing education, there are no waivers.

  • You will report your continuing education during the renewal of your mortuary science license.
  • Preapproved continuing education programs, seminars, courses, workshops, professional or technical presentations, or activities that are approved by the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice (“The Academy”), provided by an American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE) accredited program or sponsored by a hospital or other licensed healthcare institution or government agency. The department reserves the right to determine whether a course provided by these methods is not approved for credit.

List of approved continuing education courses by the department is coming soon.

  • If the course does not meet the preapproved method, email the department at CSCLonline@michigan.gov and request a Continuing Education Provider application.
