Mortuary Science Initial License

Initial License: Apply for an initial license if you want a new license and you have never been issued this license type in Michigan.

Initial License Information

  • Complete a "Mortuary Science License" application through MiCLEAR.

  • Completion of not less than 90 semester or the equivalent quarter hours with not less than a 2.00 grade point average of non-remedial college level courses at an accredited college or university, including graduation from an accredited mortuary science program.

  • In order to consider an application complete and to avoid delays of processing, the following documents must be uploaded as part of the application: 

    • Contact The Conference to submit your passing National Arts and Sciences exam scores to our office.
    • Provide your Official Transcripts.
    • Provide your Final “Embalming and Resident Trainee Rating Report
    • Provide a certified statement from the examining board of the state in which you hold a license that shows the basis on which the license was granted and whether the board has suspended, revoked, or limited that license. (for reciprocal applicants only)
    • If requesting a fee waiver as an individual who served in the armed forces – form DD214, DD215, or any other form acceptable to the Department that demonstrates you were separated from service with an honorable character of service or under honorable conditions (general) character of service.
    • If you have a social security number and did not provide the number during registration, OR if you are exempt under law from obtaining or disclosing your social security number. You must download the SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER EXPLANATION FORM, complete it, and upload it as a supporting documentation attachment to your application.
  • Complete a "Mortuary Science License" application through the MiCLEAR and when asked how applying choose "Reciprocal." 

    Submit the following items:

    • Mortuary Science School Transcripts
    • National Arts and Science exam scores
    • A certified statement from the examining board of the state in which the Mortuary Science, Funeral Director or Embalmer license was granted, and whether that board has suspended, revoked, or limited that license.

    Once the application has been received and all supporting documents have been reviewed and determined to meet the licensure requirements, the applicant will receive an email authorizing the applicant to take the State of Michigan Jurisprudence examination.

  • Once the application and all other requirements have been met and reviewed to be found complete, applicant will receive an email authorizing them to take the State Jurisprudence Examination and how to schedule the examination.
