33 Clues of Intoxication

Section 801(2) of the Michigan Liquor Control Code states that “A retail licensee shall not directly or indirectly, individually or by a clerk, agent, or servant sell, furnish, or give alcoholic liquor to a person who is visibly intoxicated”.  Section 707(3) states that “A licensee, or the clerk, servant, agent, or employee of a licensee shall not be in an intoxicated condition on the licensed premises”.

  1. Aggressive or Belligerent
  2. Annoying other; patrons or servers
  3. Argumentative
  4. Bloodshot; glassy eyes
  5. Boisterous
  6. Bumping into things
  7. Careless with money
  8. Complaining about drink prices or drink strength
  9. Depressed, sullen, crying or moody
  10. Difficulty handling money or picking up change
  11. Difficulty remembering
  12. Difficulty standing up or walking
  13. Disheveled clothing or mussed hair
  14. Drinking alone
  15. Drinking too fast
  16. Drowsy
  17. Entering the wrong gender’s bathroom
  18. Letting a cigarette burn without smoking it
  19. Lighting more than one cigarette or lighting the wrong end
  20. Loud speech
  21. Making inappropriate comments
  22. Obnoxious or mean
  23. Ordering doubles
  24. Overly friendly to other patrons and employees
  25. Paying for strangers' drinks
  26. Radical changes in behavior or voice level
  27. Slow response to questions
  28. Slurred speech
  29. Spilling drinks, clumsy
  30. Swaying, staggering
  31. Unable to focus eyes or read nearby signs
  32. Unable to sit straight in chair or bar stool
  33. Urging other people to have another drink
