The Rural Development Fund Board, housed in the Office of Rural Prosperity, has oversight of the Rural Development Fund. The Board is charged with advising the Office on how to distribute tax revenue collected from mines to improve and strengthen local communities. Director is a voting member and makes final decision on projects (Public Act 411 of 2012).

Like many law enforcement agencies, the Cheboygan County Sheriff's Department faced significant staffing pressures, from navigating retirements to balancing intense operational demands. To create a sustainable pathway for developing and retaining talent from within, the department partnered with Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium to launch a Corrections Officer Registered Apprenticeship Program.
Through structured on-the-job learning, related instruction and dedicated mentorship, registered apprentices master critical public safety skills while earning nationally recognized credentials.
Nicole and Jacob recently celebrated the successful completion of their Registered Apprenticeships in Corrections. Throughout their training, both registered apprentices received steady guidance and encouragement from Lt. Brenda Beckwith and leadership across the sheriff's department, demonstrating how dedicated journeyworker mentorship fosters confidence and long-term retention.
The impact of this earn-and-learn model extends well beyond initial completion by creating clear, continuous career pathways. Building directly on the foundational skills, discipline and operational experience developed during his corrections training, Jacob is now advancing his public safety journey as a Deputy Patrol Officer in training.
