Kayla's Registered Apprenticeship journey
June 22, 2026
Shining Star Pre-School first engaged with Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! at an Apprenticeship 101 event in July 2024. Inspired by the opportunities available through Registered Apprenticeships, the organization quickly committed to becoming one of the first employer partners in the Early Childhood Education Registered Apprenticeship initiative, demonstrating a strong investment in workforce development and staff growth.
In September 2024, Kayla began her journey as an Early Childhood Education registered apprentice. From the outset, she demonstrated exceptional commitment, professionalism and determination, successfully completing all program requirements within the established timeframe.
Kayla became the first registered apprentice in the program to earn both her Child Development Associate credential and her U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship credential, setting a strong example for her peers.
Motivated by her success and long-term career goals, Kayla is continuing her professional development by enrolling in a second Registered Apprenticeship Program this summer. This next step aligns with her goal of earning a certification as an Early Childhood Program Director through Macomb Community College, ultimately working toward becoming a Center Director at Shining Star Pre-School.
Kayla credits the Registered Apprenticeship pathway as a critical factor in her success, emphasizing that the structured training, hands-on experience, and ongoing support provided her with the confidence and direction needed to advance. She also highlights the impact of funding opportunities made available through the National Apprenticeship Fund in partnership with Jobs for the Future.
In May 2025, Kayla faced an unexpected challenge when a car accident left her without reliable transportation. Through her connection with Michigan Works!, she was connected to a scholarship opportunity and awarded funding to help cover essential expenses. This support allowed her to remain focused on both her employment and training during a difficult time, ensuring she could successfully complete her program.
Throughout her journey, Michigan Works! played a key role in supporting Kayla’s success by providing guidance, connecting her to resources, and celebrating her milestones along the way. Reflecting on her experience, Kayla shared:
“Evylon from Michigan Works! has been incredibly helpful throughout this entire process—from getting started to navigating next steps,” shared Kayla. “This was all new to us, and her support has made a huge difference. I feel like every accomplishment is celebrated with her. I also appreciate the support from Victoria, who helped me find the scholarship opportunity and continues to check in regularly.”
Kayla’s story is a powerful example of how Registered Apprenticeship can create meaningful career pathways, support individuals through barriers, and help employers build a skilled, dedicated workforce.
