More than 2,000 election workers recruited through Democracy MVP campaign

Recruitment continues ahead of Aug. 4 primary

With just under two months to go before the August 4 primary, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson continues to call on Michiganders to be MVPs in the team sport of Democracy. The efforts to recruit election workers for the August and November elections have already been incredibly successful, with nearly 2,100 workers from 75 of Michigan’s 83 counties already signed up and many more expected to volunteer in the weeks ahead.

Election workers are the most valuable players in our democracy, and we can’t have successful elections without them,” said Secretary Benson. “The number of people we’ve already seen apply to serve is inspiring and reinforces how committed the people of Michigan are to ensuring we have safe, secure and accessible elections, even in the midst of a pandemic.”

The expected increase in absentee ballots for both elections, combined with the need to maintain social distancing protocols throughout the day and during the processing of ballots, means more workers than ever before are needed to serve on Election Day. Any registered voter is eligible to serve and will be paid for their time.

“Democracy is crucial — now more than ever,” said Elizabeth Presley of Kalamazoo in her application. “It’s important to protect our right to vote and the safety of the process. Mail in voting will take all of us — voters and workers alike. It’s time to give back.”

Visit Michigan.gov/DemocracyMVP to sign up. Volunteers will have their information shared with clerks needing assistance for either election. Michiganders who are not registered to vote can do so at Michigan.gov/Vote before signing up.

Organizations, teams, businesses, and community leaders looking to participate in this recruitment effort and help spread the word should email DemocracyMVP@Michigan.gov  to connect with the Department of State or follow the campaign on social media @DemocracyMVP on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
