Because of national system maintenance by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), driver’s license/ID transactions won’t be able to be completed online or at self-service stations from 2 a.m. through noon Sunday, May 11. Vehicle transactions will still be available, with the exception of online title transfers.

November 07, 2022
Customers encouraged to use online services at Michigan.gov/SOS
Lansing, Mich. – Secretary of State offices and the Office of the Great Seal will be closed for Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8, and the Veterans Day holiday, Friday, Nov. 11.
For those in immediate need of Secretary of State services, most license plate types can be ordered or renewed online at Michigan.gov/SOS. Temporary driver’s licenses and registrations for vehicles and motorcycles may be printed, allowing motorists to drive legally until they get their renewed driver’s license, plate or tab in the mail. Additionally, customers may order a duplicate registration or title, change their address, and register to be an organ donor on the website.
Driver’s licenses, state IDs and license plate tabs can also be renewed at self-service stations, many of which are located in grocery stores and open Tuesday and Friday. Visit Michigan.gov/SOS to find a self-service station near you.
The Department of State mails notices to motorists 90 days before their driver’s license, state ID or license plate expires to give them time to renew. Licenses, IDs and plates that expire on a day when state offices are closed, such as a holiday or weekend, can be renewed the following day without penalty.
Residents can access Secretary of State online services at Michigan.gov/SOS. They can schedule an office visit at the same site or by calling 888-SOS-MICH.
