Secretary Benson and local leaders launch newest Secretary of State mobile office serving the Upper Peninsula

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Today, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson celebrated the official launch of Michigan’s newest mobile Secretary of State office at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in downtown Marquette. Benson was joined by State Rep. Jenn Hill (D-Marquette), City of Marquette Mayor Sally Davis, and other local leaders for the ceremonial launch of the Upper Peninsula mobile office, based in Marquette and serving communities throughout the U.P.

“Mobile offices help us meet people where they are and bring essential state government services right to them in a way that’s convenient, accessible, and equitable,” Secretary Benson said. “I’m glad I could be in Marquette today to celebrate the state’s newest mobile office, now serving the entire Upper Peninsula and supporting the people and communities who may not have easy access to our offices or our website.”

"The launch of this mobile office is a significant step forward in ensuring all Michiganders, regardless of where they live, have access to essential services like driver’s license renewals and vehicle title transfers,” said Rep. Jenn Hill. “This initiative is particularly important for those with limited transportation options who face challenges traveling long distances. By bringing these services directly to rural communities, we are not only enhancing convenience but also demonstrating our commitment to equity and service to all residents."

"The mobile office ribbon cutting was awesome for Marquette County," said Linda Talsma, Marquette County clerk. "We have a very large land base here. And we have very, very many people that are in areas where it's hard for them to get service – to come to Marquette could be an hour and a half drive for them. Anytime we can make it easier for the public to access these sorts of things, especially in this presidential election year, to make their voice heard and make their vote count, it's all worth it."

Secretary Benson launched the mobile office program in the fall of 2021 with a single van serving Southeast Michigan. Since then, the fleet has grown to seven vehicles serving the entire state. Mobile offices have participated in more than 500 events in communities throughout Michigan and conducted nearly 14,000 transactions for residents.

Mobile offices also visit senior centers, veterans’ organizations, addiction recovery centers, and communities where residents have limited mobility or unreliable internet access. In April, the U.P. mobile office made a special trip to Mackinac Island to assist permanent residents and seasonal workers before the 2024 tourist season began.

Community organizations interested in hosting a mobile office can fill out a request form at Michigan.gov/SOSMobile.
