With less than 24 hours before the polls open on Election Day, 1,214,251 Michigan voters have already cast their ballot for the August 2026 Primary Election – a turnout rate of 16.5% of the state’s active registered voters.

Polling places are open statewide tomorrow on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

LANSING, Mich. – With less than 24 hours before the polls open on Election Day, 1,214,251 Michigan voters have already cast their ballot for the August 2026 Primary Election – a turnout rate of 16.5% of the state’s active registered voters. Over 138,000 voted in person at an early voting site, and more than one million voters have submitted a mail (absentee) ballot.    

In-person early voting – 2026 vs. 2024 

Early voting turnout for the 2026 primary is outpacing 2024, which was the first year Michigan voters had the option to vote in person at an early voting site. At the close of the nine-day statewide early voting period Sunday, Aug. 2, a total of 138,680 voters had cast a ballot at an early voting site – an increase of 88.6% over 2024. The highest turnout day was Sunday, Aug. 2, with 24,218 ballots cast. 

Midterm Primary Election Mail Ballots – 2026 vs. 2022 

As of 7 a.m. today, Aug. 3, a total of 1,075,571 voters have returned their absentee ballot by mail, ballot drop box, or their clerk’s office – an increase of 21.5% over the number of ballots returned one day before the August 2022 Primary. A total of 1,987,939 Michigan voters have requested a mail ballot, including 1,924,382 on the permanent mail ballot list. 

Some communities still have early voting sites open today, Monday, Aug. 3. – check mi.gov/earlyvoting to verify locations and hours: 

• City of Lansing (Ingham County) 
• Grand Blanc Township (Genesee County) 
• Harrison Township (Macomb County) 
• Erie Township and City of Luna Pier (Monroe County) 
• City of Lincoln Park (Wayne County) 
• Van Buren Township (Wayne County)

Voters who have received but have not yet returned their absentee ballot should return it to an official ballot drop box in their jurisdiction or hand deliver it to their local clerk’s office. Voters should not mail ballots this close to Election Day. With the exception of military and overseas voters, all absentee ballots must be received by clerk’s offices or drop boxes by 8 p.m. on Election Day or they will not be counted.

Eligible Michigan citizens can still register to vote in person today and on Election Day at their city or township clerk’s office with proof of residency. Voters can register and cast a ballot on the same day.

Polling places will be open tomorrow, Aug. 4, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time. As long as voters are in line by 8 p.m., they will be able to vote. Voters who see or experience intimidation or interference at the polls should immediately inform their local clerk and call the National Voter Protection Hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE.
