Electrical Examination, Licensing/Registration & Application Information

Effective May 1, 2019 all Master, Journeyman, Fire Alarm Specialty Technician, Sign Specialist, and their respective Contractor exams will be updated to cover the content in the 2017 Michigan Electrical Code Rules Part 8, the 2017 National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), and current versions of 1972 PA 230 and 2016 PA 407.

Effective June 14, 2017 electrical examinations may include questions from The Skilled Trades Regulation Act, 2016 PA 407 as well as the respective code.

Additionally, examinations are now conducted by PSI. Approved applicants will be contacted by PSI to schedule their examination at one (1) of five (5) PSI testing centers throughout the state and are available to test six (6) days a week. Applicants are able to choose their testing center and day of examination. All examination fees are required to be paid to PSI at the time an examination is scheduled. Therefore, as of June 14, 2017, examination fees should no longer be submitted to the State of Michigan/Bureau of Construction Codes.

Code Update Tracking

For tracking courses, the Bureau has expanded its partnership with CE Broker.  CE Broker offers a free service that provides for the tracking of continuing education and the listing of all Code Update Courses, Related Technical Instruction providers for electrical apprentices, and Examination Prep Courses.

NOTE: Applications for electrical licensing examinations 
The state's electrical examination, licensure, and registration applications shall only be used by persons who are eligible to be licensed or registered by the state of Michigan. The state of Michigan issues electrical licenses or registrations to residents in most communities in the state of Michigan. However, if you reside in the following communities where electrical licenses or registrations are issued locally, you should not use this form nor should you submit it to the state of Michigan:

City of Detroit.

Apprentice Registration

Application for Electrical Apprentice or Fire Alarm Specialty Technician Apprentice

Electrical Journeyman License 

• Must be at least 20 years of age.
• Have not less than 8,000 hours of practical experience obtained over a period of not less than 4 years related to electrical construction or maintenance of buildings or electrical wiring or equipment under the direct supervision of a person licensed under 2016 PA 407. (Maximum credit of 2,000 hours per year.)
• Credit may be provided for graduation from or attendance at a recognized training or educational program.
• Must take and pass the examination.  

Application for Journeyman, Master Electrician Examination, Fire Alarm Specialty Technician or Sign Specialist Examination

 Master Electrician License 

• Must be at least 22 years of age.
• Has held an electrical journeyman's license for not less than 2 years.
• Have not less than 12,000 hours of experience obtained over a period of not less than 6 years related to electrical construction, the maintenance of buildings, or electrical wiring or equipment under the supervision of a master electrician.
• Must take and pass the examination.

Application for Journeyman, Master Electrician Examination, Fire Alarm Specialty Technician or Sign Specialist Examination

Electrical Contractor License

• Holds a master electrician's license or has not less than 1 master electrician residing in this state who is in his or her full-time employ. The master electrician shall be actively in charge of and responsible for code compliance of all installations of electrical wiring and equipment.
• Out-of-state corporations will not qualify for a contractor's license unless they employ a master electrician residing in the state of Michigan.
• Must take and pass the examination.

Application for Electrical/Fire Alarm/Sign Contractor Examination

Fire Alarm Specialty Technician License

• Must be at least 20 years of age.
• Be certified by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technology (NICET) as an associate engineering technician, level II, or the equivalent as determined by the board, in the field of fire alarm systems technology.
• Must take and pass the examination.

Application for Journeyman, Master Electrician Examination, Fire Alarm Specialty Technician or Sign Specialist Examination

Fire Alarm Contractor License

• Holds a fire alarm specialty technician's license or has not less than 1 fire alarm specialty technician residing in this state who is in his or her full-time employ. The fire alarm specialty technician shall be actively in charge of and responsible for code compliance of all installations of fire alarm system wiring and equipment.
• Out-of-state corporations will not qualify for a contractor's license unless they employ a fire alarm specialty technician residing in the state of Michigan.
• Must take and pass the examination.

Application for Electrical/Fire Alarm/Sign Contractor Examination

Sign Specialist License

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Have not less than 4,000 hours of experience, obtained over a period of not less than 2 years, related to manufacture, installation, maintenance, connection, or repair of electric signs and related wiring, as verified by a contractor licensed under this act.
• Successful completion of of an approved training course per 2016 PA 407.
• Must take and pass the examination.

Sign Specialty Contractor License

• Holds a sign specialist's license or has not less than 1 sign specialist residing in this state who is in his or her full-time employ. The sign specialist shall be actively in charge of and responsible for code compliance of all installations, connection, and repair of electric signs and related wiring.
• Out-of-state corporations will not qualify for a contractor's license unless they employ a sign specialist residing in the state of Michigan.
• Must provide evidence of public liability insurance.
• Must take and pass the examination.
