LARA Summarily Suspends a Group Child Care Home License in Kent County

The Dept. of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), Child Care Licensing Bureau (CCLB), has summarily suspended and issued a notice of intent to revoke the group child care home license of Datasha Chapman, located at 1015 Benjamin Avenue SE in Grand Rapids.

The complaint investigation that concluded on June 23, 2023, found violations of the Child Care Organizations Act and administrative rules, including but not limited to the following:

  • Failure to act in a manner that is conducive to the welfare of children
  • Failure to ensure the home is conducive to the welfare of children
  • Failure to maintain the home in a clean, safe, comfortable condition
  • Failure to keep dangerous items inaccessible to children

Effective 6:00 p.m., on June 23, 2023, the summary suspension order and notice of intent to revoke prohibits Chapman from operating a group child care home at 1015 Benjamin Avenue SE, in Grand Rapids, or at any other address or location. Accordingly, she may not accept children for care after that date and time. The order also requires the licensee to inform all parents of children in her care that the license has been suspended and that she can no longer provide child care.

It was critical to take emergency action to protect the health, welfare, and safety of the children at this group child care home.
