LARA issues cease and desist order against unlicensed crematory business

The Cemetery Commissioner has issued a Notice and Order to Cease and Desist against Great Lakes Crematory, Inc., doing business as Great Lakes Cremation Service, located at 800 Tacoma Ct., Clio, MI 48420, for operating a crematory without a valid registration issued under the Cemetery Regulation Act (the “Act”), MCL 456.521 et seq.
The Notice and Order to Cease and Desist orders Great Lakes Crematory, Inc. to immediately cease operating its unregistered crematory. The Notice and Order to Cease and Desist will become a Final Order if the Respondent, Great Lakes Crematory, Inc., fails to request a hearing within 30 days of the date of issuance. Additionally, a criminal referral was made to local law enforcement given their authority to criminally prosecute violations of the Act.
A complaint was filed on August 11, 2024, regarding possible violation of the Cemetery Act involving Great Lakes Cremation Service. An investigation commenced immediately. Investigators determined that the crematory was in violation of the Cemetery Act and a cease and desist order was rendered on October 1, 2024, effective immediately. The respondent has 30 days to submit a written request for a hearing. If no request is made, this cease and desist order will become the final order.
The Cemetery Commissioner is authorized under the Act to investigate any alleged violations of the Act, take appropriate disciplinary action to prevent such violations, and impose fines and other sanctions against any person, applicant, or registrant that violates the Act.
