Routine support turns into much more for MRS customer
August 27, 2026
When Norman was referred to Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS), he thought his only vocational need was assistance with the purchase of a new prosthetic. It turned out he would need much more than that.
Norman lost his leg over a decade ago due to a work injury, but he didn’t let that stop him from continuing to work. For the past several years, Norman worked as a retail salesperson at Ashley Home Store to help customers fill their furniture needs. Between this part-time employment and the social security disability income he received due to his limb loss, he was happy.
When the time came for his prosthetic to be replaced, Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital contacted MRS for assistance. Working with Norman, Mary Free Bed and Norman’s insurance, MRS was able to provide some financial assistance towards a new prosthetic and help Norman receive a new device.
However, due to corporate restructuring, Norman lost his job before his MRS case was closed.
Norman and his MRS counselor went back to the drawing board to identify a part-time job that didn’t require Norman to be on his feet all day. After hitting many dead ends, MRS counselor connected Norman with the Business Network Division and a business resource consultant who had many connections in the area.
The Business Network Division consultant met with Norman and listened to his passion about art. Despite some initial reservations about the availability of jobs in this field, the team worked with Norman to set up several interviews at local businesses and organizations in the art community.
After being offered a few different jobs, Norman decided to accept a job at Pottery Barn as a design specialist. The job allows Norman to create and present design plans based on his clients needs, style, living space and preferences – both in stores and at customers’ homes.
MRS was also able to connect Norman to benefits counseling to help him report his wages and gain an understanding of how his current employment may impact his benefits.
While Norman feels like he still has a lot to learn, he is having fun! He has been thoroughly enjoying his work and utilizing his passion to assist customers.
