MRS helps customer with selective mutism find job, gain independence

Makayla opened a case with Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) while she was in high school and participated in Pre-Employment Transition Services with Northern Michigan Services and Disability Network. In high school, she had an Individualized Education Plan for learning disabilities in mathematics and written expression along with symptoms related to selective mutism.

Makayla did not speak to adults, using other ways to communicate while participating in services.

After graduation, Makayla worked with her MRS counselor to schedule her participation in job readiness and job placement services. MRS then helped Makalya apply for a job, advocated for her during the interview and worked to educate her potential employer. She was hired as a cashier and stocker at Dollar General close to her home, allowing her to maintain connection with her family while still becoming independent.

When she first started with her employment, communication was still a barrier. Working with the employer and an MRS vendor, she was able to progress within her job duties, talking to customers and gaining the skills to maintain her employment.

During the follow-up services with her MRS counselor, Makayla was given many positive reviews by her employer. The assistant manager reported she would “like to have ten Makayla’s as employees.”
