MiUI Minute: Issue 41

The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) is transitioning to a new unemployment tax and benefits system called MiUI, which will replace the current Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM). MiUI is being launched in two parts, with Tax functions now live, and Benefits functions scheduled to be available November 9.

In this issue of the MiUI Minute, we are reminding employers to initiate their MiUI account before the Benefits phase of MiUI rolls out. Find past editions of the MiUI Minute at MiUI University.

Time is Running Out! Initiate your MiUI Employer Account Before Go Live for Benefits

It is very important that employers initiate their own MiUI unemployment account. Even if you have a third-party administrator (TPA) you must maintain your own employer account.

You need your own MiUI account to see benefit claim information or file protests and appeals when MiUI for Benefits launches on Monday, Nov. 9, and MiWAM is permanently offline.

Employers must assign the right benefits roles to any TPAs you use and be in the MiUI system to do things on your own.

Don’t wait! Initiate your MiUI employer account TODAY!

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Find Your MiUI Activation Code
    • Users must log into the MiWAM unemployment system to access an 8-digit MiUI Activation Code. If your business operates as a liable employer and acts or reports on behalf of other companies as a TPA, you must manage your employer account and TPA account separately, with two Activation Codes.
    • Users with a MiWAM Master role will see the MiUI Activation Code tab on the MiWAM landing page (pictured here).
    • If you do not see your MiUI Activation Code tab, you may not have access. You can provide your employer account number (EAN), username, and title in the Employer - TPA Issue Tracker using the MiWAM issue type to get access to your MiUI Activation Code tab.
    • Note: If the MiWAM or MiUI account owner is no longer with the company, you can request a change to the UIA account owner information. Please use the Employer - TPA Issue Tracker to report this issue.
IMPORTANT: Employers must get their MiUI Activation Code in MiWAM to be able to initiate their MiUI account before MiWAM shuts down permanently at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2.
  2. Use MiLogin for Business to Access MiUI
    • You must create a MiLogin for Business account or use your existing MiLogin for Business account to access MiUI. MiUI does not require a separate set of credentials for login; when you sign into your MiLogin for Business account you will be able to access MiUI.
    • Your MiWAM User ID cannot be used to access MiLogin for Business.
    • You can find a link to MiUI on UIA’s website to initiate your MiUI account. Be sure to bookmark the link applicable to you or click the link below so MiUI will automatically be added as a service to your MiLogin for Business account:
    • If you are a TPA and an employer, you must have a separate MiUI account for each role because the functionality for employers and TPAs is different. You will need an employer User ID and password for MiLogin for Business to manage your business unemployment responsibilities. You will need a separate TPA User ID and password for MiLogin for Business to associate your TPA account with the employers you serve to be able to complete any actions on their behalf.
  3. Confirm TPA Associations and Roles

Be Aware of a Downtime Period

A Downtime Period is a scheduled ahead of the MiUI for Benefits launch. During this time, MiWAM and MiUI will be unavailable to accommodate the  transition to MiUI. During the Downtime Period, the Office of Employer Ombudsman and Customer Service phone lines will be unavailable and UIA Local Offices will be closed while the system update is made. You will still be able to use UIA’s website at Michigan.gov/UIA and its chatbot to find information on MiUI and general unemployment questions.

The Downtime Period will start at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2 (after which point MiWAM will be permanently offline), and extend through 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9. MiUI will be available for all tax and benefits functions on Monday morning, Nov. 9.

Where to find more information
