East Lansing Fire Department Creates Innovative Registered Apprenticeship Program
December 18, 2025
On October 23, the East Lansing Fire Department was given a Race to Talent – Registered Apprenticeship Champion award by Capital Area Michigan Works!.
The East Lansing Fire Department partnered with Lansing Community College’s Health and Human Services division to create a Fire Medic Registered Apprenticeship in which their employees can be upskilled through paramedic training at Lansing Community College.
The award was a result of the East Lansing Fire Department’s enthusiasm for the Registered Apprenticeship process and their willingness to try a new model for EMS training in Michigan. The East Lansing Fire Department was one of three local employers honored during an event at Lansing Community College’s West Campus aimed at helping local businesses to offer Registered Apprenticeships to build the local talent pipeline.
The event included a representative from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, Capital Area Michigan Works! workforce development experts and Tri-County area business leaders and employers. They shared valuable information about the support available for local businesses to establish new or participate in existing Registered Apprenticeship Programs.
