Expanding opportunities through Registered Apprenticeship
June 22, 2026
Alana Anderson, Director of Adult Transition Services at the Livingston Educational Service Agency (LESA), set out with a clear vision: to create meaningful employment opportunities that would allow transition-age students to live and work within their own community.
To achieve this, Alana partnered with Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) to develop a customized Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) that brings this vision to life.
Through a collaborative effort between the MRS Ann Arbor District Office, the Michigan Career and Technical Institute (MCTI), and the MRS Business Network Division, a U.S. Department of Labor-approved RAP was created for up to two custodian positions at LESA.
This innovative approach enables students to become full-time LESA employees with benefits while building the skills they need for long-term success. As one of Livingston County’s largest employers, LESA is also using the RAP to strengthen the local talent pipeline and support workforce needs across the county.
MCTI serves as the RAP intermediary and provides LESA with curriculum resources for the related technical instruction. The program was endorsed with the Michigan Apprenticeship Readiness Credential (MARC) in April 2026, recognizing its commitment to delivering high-quality Registered Apprenticeship preparation and supporting participant success.
Launched in February 2025, the initiative has been met with tremendous enthusiasm. Based on its early success, LESA is already developing a Teacher’s Aide Registered Apprenticeship and plans to share this model with other Michigan school districts.
“Our Registered Apprenticeship Program is about more than learning a trade—it's about creating opportunity, fostering independence and building a community where everyone has a chance to succeed,” shared Alana. “LESA is honored to offer the state's first customized custodial Registered Apprenticeship and looks forward to seeing the impact these talented individuals will make throughout Livingston County.”
On May 27, 2026, Alana was invited to speak on a panel highlighting innovative apprenticeship practices and was honored with the Race to Talent Registered Apprenticeship Champion Award. This recognition celebrates her leadership and dedication to expanding meaningful employment pathways for transition students across Livingston County.
