Snowmobile trail over Agate Falls in Ontonagon County to be closed this winter
October 20, 2026
Trail reroute will be available
With repair work on trestle footings continuing beyond a previously anticipated completion date, a section of snowmobile Trail UP8 will be closed this winter, with a reroute available.
The Agate Trestle, a key attraction which crosses the Middle Branch of the Ontonagon River more than 100 feet above Agate Falls, has compromised footings causing the trail section closure between Bruce Crossing and Kenton.
The available trail re-route is located south of Trail UP8. It uses portions of trails UP3, UP150 and UP107. Engineering is underway to design a fix for the footings. Repairs are expected to be undertaken in 2027. Originally, the trail was scheduled to be closed until Nov. 1.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Parks and Recreation Division and the Sno Valley Riders Snowmobile Club are working together to erect signs along the reroute and minimize the impact to the surrounding community.
The trestle was built in 1900 by the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway. No railroad train has crossed the trestle since 1981. A decade later, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources acquired the trestle and railroad line, transitioning usage to recreation.
