The new Lake Michigan beach house will include an ADA-accessible building with an open-concept layout that will feature:
The Lake Michigan beach house project has faced lengthy delays due to several unforeseen challenges during construction, including weather, permitting, and quality/workmanship issues.
We're currently working through quality control issues with the contractor, requiring a full replacement of several items that did not meet the required specifications and quality standards set forth in the contract. The contractor has ordered replacement materials and will resume construction soon. The DNR is coordinating closely with the contractor, DTMB and our permitting agencies to complete the project and open the Lake Michigan beach house to the public as quickly as possible, while also ensuring the building is safe and constructed to standard.
All work on the beach house is being constructed by contractors and their subcontractors. No portion of the work has been completed by DNR staff. This project is managed by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget (DTMB) on behalf of the DNR.
Due to the nature of the construction challenges within this project, there is currently no firm completion date for the Lake Michigan beach house. The timeline for opening the facility depends on the contractor's construction progress and the issuance of all required permits. The facility will open to the public as soon as construction is complete and an occupancy permit is issued.
Once open, this modern, accessible facility will provide safe, enjoyable and accessible amenities for years to come.
We're working with the appropriate permitting authorities to determine if it is possible to open the Lake Michigan beach house for weekend use prior to the final completion. This would require the issuance of a temporary occupancy permit based upon current construction progress. We'll provide updated information on our website if/when a temporary occupancy permit is issued.

Construction is largely complete outside of the required replacement of defective items that do not meet quality standards. The primary holdup is the delivery of replacement materials. Once these materials arrive, construction will resume.
Park staff are working hard to anticipate crowd size and order enough portable toilets to meet demand on the busy summer weekends. We'll continue working with the contractor to ensure there are clean and sufficient facilities available to the public throughout the remainder of the project.
As part of widespread enhancements at Muskegon State Park, the Lake Michigan beach house is being funded through an approximate $2.5 million investment from the American Rescue Plan Act.
Outlined in Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Building Michigan Together Plan, an unprecedented $273 million has allowed the DNR to tackle many needs from a decades-long maintenance backlog in state parks and trails across the state. It also funds the development of Flint’s new state park – the first in Genesee County.
