 District 1 counties of service: Baraga, Dickinson, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, Marquette, Menominee, Ontonagon.

CO Ethen Mapes assisted the Michigan State Police in locating a key piece of evidence in a case involving a high-speed chase and the assault of an MSP trooper. After the suspect was apprehended, he admitted to burying a rifle while he was on the run. A sergeant, two MSP troopers, and CO Mapes were able to track the suspect’s whereabouts from the days prior and located the buried rifle with a large amount of ammunition. This is an ongoing case.

While on patrol in Menominee County, CO Steve Sajtar responded within three minutes to a report of an unresponsive18-month-old child floating face down in a pond. CO Sajtar arrived on scene and immediately assisted the parents in establishing the child’s airway. Once turned, the child vomited and began crying. CO Sajtar monitored the child and instructed the parents to lightly pat the toddler's back to clear out any remaining water. The Mid County Rescue Squad arrived shortly after to take over emergency care. EMS transported the toddler to a hospital in Marinette, Wisconsin, before a flight transferred the patient to Green Bay, Wisconsin, for advanced medical treatment. A follow-up contact by CO Sajtar one week later confirmed the child had made a full recovery.

CO Steve Sajtar was patrolling Lake Michigan during a local salmon-fishing tournament when he contacted a vessel operating with no navigation lights after sunset. The operator had noticeably slurred speech and admitted to have been drinking alcohol. CO Sajtar conducted Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs) and a Preliminary Breath Test (PBT). The operator blew a 0.131 BrAC and was arrested the operator for operating a motorboat while under the influence (OWI). The operator was taken to Bay Area Medical Center for a legal blood draw then lodged at the Menominee County Jail.

District 2 counties of service: Alger, Chippewa, Delta, Mackinac, Luce, Schoolcraft.

CO Andrea Dani assisted the Alger County Sheriff's Department and EMS with an ORV crash with injuries. The operator failed to negotiate a corner, left the trail, and struck several trees. The operator was ejected off the four-wheeler into the ditch and was believed to have two broken femurs.

District 3 counties of service: Alpena, Antrim, Cheboygan, Charlevoix, Emmet, Montmorency, Otsego, Presque Isle.

CO Adam LeClerc responded to assist with washouts and landslides during a thunderstorm that dropped upward of six inches of rain in an hour. Multiple wash outs on M-119 caused Lankin Road to be covered in running water and mud. CO LeClerc assisted Emmet County Sheriff’s deputies with checking on citizens and properties on Lankin Road. Along the road, in spots, were two feet of water or upwards of four inches of mud. All citizens were safe along the road and most decided to stay versus evacuating the area. 

COs Jack Gorno and Sidney LaLonde responded to a report of a boat running aground in a channel on Lake Huron and taking on water. COs Gorno and Lalonde arrived on scene, determined there were no injuries, and transported the occupants to a nearby marina. The vessel was removed later by Towboat USA. 

CO Jack Gorno responded to an emergency call regarding three subjects struggling on kayaks in Lake Huron. Recognizing the extreme urgency of the situation, CO Gorno immediately boarded a Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office dive team vessel. The rescue crew traveled approximately 10 miles north toward the Mackinac Bridge. By the time they arrived on scene, the U.S. Coast Guard had successfully recovered the kayakers from the water. Two subjects survived the incident, and one subject perished.

COs Kevin Bunce and Nico Luna were on patrol on Belle Isle when a vehicle was witnessed travelling the wrong way around the island. A stop was initiated where it was determined the driver had been operating on a suspended license. The operator had been ticketed for operation on a suspended license five times, with five active outstanding warrants out of Wayne County for the same offense. Wayne County requested the COs to advise and release on the warrants. A licensed driver was located and provided safe transport to the individual off the island.

District 4 counties of service: Benzie, Grand Traverse, Lake, Leelanau, Manistee, Mason, Mecosta, Newaygo, Oceana, Wexford.

CO Will Kinney received a litter complaint in Benzie County of a large volume of trash left behind by a dispersed camp. When CO Kinney was investigating the trash, he identified a possible suspect. The suspect had been ticketed by Sgt. Amanda Weaver several years ago and CO Kinney was able to locate the camper after they had moved to a new location several miles down the road. The male in the camping group admitted to leaving some items behind and not going back to pick up the remainder of the trash. The suspect was cited for littering.

While on patrol, CO Joshua Wright and Sgt. Amanda Weaver received a call for service from central dispatch detailing three subjects who had capsized their kayaks in the Manistee River within Wexford County. The COs were already on the river upstream, so they responded downstream in their jet boat. The COs were able to get all three subjects to the riverbank as well as recover all their gear. Following that, the COs transported two older gentlemen, who were not in good health, back to their vehicle at an access site after their inner tubes deflated on the river and they were not able to make the float downstream. Following that, the COs patrolled back upriver and had to take enforcement action on several groups of people due to them not having personal floatation devices with them in their kayaks and canoes.

COs Bill Haskin and Josh Wright responded to the Manistee River due to a call for service coming out for three subjects who had capsized their canoe and were caught in a log jam in the river. The COs, as well as a Wexford County deputy, travelled upriver to the log jam. The officers safely pulled all three subjects from the river, gathered their equipment, and returned to the access site where EMS was standing by. The subjects were all fine and in good condition.

CO Josiah Killingbeck was on the scene of an ORV crash. CO Killingbeck learned the operator had hit a root in the trail and lost control of the ORV and fell off. The subject had a possible arm fracture. CO Killingbeck provided first aid to the subject and splinted the suspected fracture. Care was turned over to EMS who transported the subject to the hospital. 

District 5 counties of service: Alcona, Arenac, Clare, Crawford, Gladwin, Iosco, Kalkaska, Missaukee, Ogemaw, Osceola, Oscoda, Roscommon.

While patrolling Crawford County, CO Ben McAteer contacted a side-by-side ORV in a closed area. The operator claimed he did not know the area was closed to ORVs despite numerous signs posted around the closure. While speaking with the operator, CO McAteer detected a strong odor of alcohol. After SFSTs were conducted, and a PBT resulted in a blood alcohol reading of .106, the subject was arrested and lodged at the Crawford County Jail. 

CO Casey Pullum was patrolling near Mio in Oscoda County when he contacted the driver of a vehicle who displayed several signs of intoxication including slurred speech, poor balance, and an overwhelming odor of intoxicants. An open alcohol container was also visible on the driver’s floorboard. The driver was suspended, had five prior operating while intoxicated convictions, and a previous driving while license suspended conviction. He submitted to a PBT with a result of .12. The driver was lodged at the Oscoda County Jail and charged with OWI, third offense, driving while license suspended, second offense, open intoxicants in a motor vehicle, and disorderly person. His bond was set at $1 million cash, surety, or 10 percent.

CO Casey Pullum was the first emergency responder to arrive at a CPR call involving an unresponsive woman in her 50’s along the Au Sable River. CO Pullum located the woman, began CPR, and utilized his department issued AED until EMS arrived and transported her for further medical care.

CO Jesse Grzechowski assisted the Tawas City Police Department and MSP during a bomb threat at a church in Iosco County. CO Grzechowski helped secure the perimeter until the MSP Bomb Squad arrived.

COs Josh Russell and Dan Robinson were conducting an ORV patrol when a report of a possibly barricaded gunman was dispatched. The COs responded with the Gladwin County Sheriff’s Department and learned that the suspect had allegedly assaulted his stepson before locking himself inside a pole barn. The stepson was highly intoxicated and unable to safely leave the property. After deputies obtained a warrant, COs Russell and Robinson assisted with taking the suspect into custody.

CO Ryan Weakman was parked at the Crooked Lake boating access site when Clare County Central Dispatch reported that a vehicle had crashed into a nearby swamp. CO Weakman was the first officer to arrive and found a vehicle approximately 150 feet from the roadway in a cattail marsh. The driver smelled of intoxicants but refused to identify himself, telling CO Weakman, “This isn’t your jurisdiction.” The driver resisted CO Weakman and a responding deputy before being arrested for OWI and felony resisting and obstructing. The Clare County Sheriff’s Department is handling the charges.

District 6 counties of service: Bay, Gratiot, Huron, Isabella, Midland, Montcalm, Saginaw, Sanilac, Tuscola.

CO Kory Crawley received a littering complaint on state land. The suspect had been staying at the location for almost two weeks in a camper. When the suspect left, they left a large pile of trash. CO Crawley could not locate any identifying material in the litter, but the camper left an obvious track due to having a flat tire. CO Crawley was able to track the camper over seven miles down gravel and paved roads due to the flat tire. The suspect was identified and admitted to leaving the litter. The subject was cited for the offense, and it was agreed that the litter would be picked up.

District 7 counties of service: Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Cass, Kalamazoo, Kent, Muskegon, Ottawa, St Joseph, Van Buren.

CO Kyle McQueer had just closed the door of his patrol truck to begin his shift when he overheard Barry County Central Dispatch report a pursuit possibly entering Barry County. Dispatch advised that a Kalamazoo County deputy had been shot and that the suspect subsequently stole the deputy’s patrol vehicle. Because CO McQueer was not in a position to join the pursuit, he responded to the original crime scene. There, COs McQueer, Jim Nason, and Maxwell Bradford provided scene security and traffic control to allow detectives to investigate and collect evidence. Fortunately, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputy is in stable condition and local law enforcement agencies were able to apprehend the suspect after an extended pursuit. The suspect is expected to face numerous felony charges.

District 8 counties of service: Branch, Calhoun, Clinton, Eaton, Hillsdale, Ingham, Ionia, Jackson, Shiawassee.

CO Zack Smith pulled into a launch and observed a pontoon just leaving the dock with an expired registration. CO Smith began to prep his boat to launch when the subjects on the pontoon observed CO Smith getting ready to launch his patrol boat. The subjects then came to shore a short distance from the launch. CO Smith approached them and spoke to them about their expired registration. The subjects stated they had just repaired the boat and were testing it after purchasing it a month ago. CO Smith then asked them if this was the first time they had had it on the water. They then told CO Smith that it was the first time. CO Smith then stated that he had observed the subjects on the pontoon in the exact same lake a week prior and that he could not contact them because he did not have his patrol boat at the time. The subjects then told CO Smith they were sorry for lying and were just nervous. A citation was issued for the violation.

CO John Byars was patrolling on Belle Isle when he noticed a large motorcycle coming up behind him in the bicycle lane. The motorcycle passed him well over the posted speed limit of 25 mph. CO Byars conducted a traffic stop. The driver of the motorcycle did not have a valid license or any proof of ownership of the motorcycle. He had several local warrants. CO Byars asked for back up and CO David Schaumburger arrived at the scene and determined that the motorcycle was stolen. During the COs attempt to place the suspect under arrest, he got back onto his motorcycle and fled. The COs caught up to the suspect after he lost control. The suspect then left the scene on foot and the COs pursued. COs Schaumburger and Nico Luna arrested the suspect by Central Avenue in the woods while CO Byars was driving towards the north to flank the suspect. COs Schaumburger and Luna took the suspect into custody. He was later taken to the Detroit Detention Center under arrest and CO Byars will be seeking several felony charges.

District 9 counties of service: Genesee, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair.

COs Olivia Moeller and Lisa Taube patrolled the Lobdell Lake Chain over a warm sunny weekend. The COs made multiple contacts educating boaters on the rules of the lakes. Two PWCs were stopped traveling on plane within the Benntt Lake Marsh and were cited for violating the slow no wake local watercraft control. Also, two anglers were stopped, and a compliance check was conducted. The anglers stated that they had caught bass but had not measured them and did not know what the minimum size length was. Between the two anglers, they were in possession of five largemouth bass that were less than 14 inches. Both anglers were cited for possessing undersize bass.

CO Sydney Griffor was checking fishing vessels coming into a local boat launch that had their limit of 12 walleyes. One angler asked when fishing licenses expire, then stated he thought they expire after a year from purchase date. The angler was very honest and told the CO his license was expired. His six walleyes were seized; he bought his license on his phone and was issued a civil infraction for failing to display fishing license in lieu of a misdemeanor.

District 10 counties of service: Lenawee, Monroe, Washtenaw, Wayne.

CO Andrew Werth was conducting an ORV patrol near Exeter Township when he observed a four-wheeler with two occupants riding on the roadway with no helmets or eye protection. The CO conducted a traffic stop on the ORV and it was discovered the machine also did not have the proper ORV license either. The passenger was warned for not wearing the proper helmet and eye protection. The operator received a citation for failing to display a valid ORV license and failing to wear the necessary helmet and eye protection on an ORV and was warned for operating an ORV on the public highway and for operating an ORV with more passengers than the machine was manufactured for.
