Island Lake Recreation Area, in partnership with the Friends of Island Lake, hosts evening lantern hikes along a 1.5-mile loop trail near Kent Lake. Solar lanterns are hung from the trees to guide the way, creating a peaceful and scenic winter walk. Restrooms will be available, and a hot beverage truck will be on-site for guests to enjoy. Two fire pits, one at the trailhead and another at the halfway point, offer warm spots to gather and take a break.

These hikes are self-guided and free to attend; however, a Michigan State Park Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry. Leashed dogs are welcome. Please note that events may be canceled in cases of extreme cold or dangerous trail conditions, so visitors are encouraged to check for updates prior to each date.

Island Lake is a beloved park year-round, with beautiful trails for hiking and biking, and on warmer days, many visitors can be found relaxing by the lake and beaches.

The upcoming 2025 winter lantern hike dates are scheduled for:

-   November 8
-   December 6

Volunteers & Group Participation

Volunteers are essential to the success of these events. Responsibilities include hanging and removing lanterns and occasionally assisting guests at the trail entrance. If your group or organization is interested in sponsoring a date and helping to host, we would be happy to list you as a co-host.

Volunteer sign-ups will be shared through our Facebook page. Please watch for posts if you’d like to get involved.

A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into Michigan state parks. To make a camping reservation, visit MIDNRReservations.com or call 1-800-447-2757.

Please Note: Dates occasionally change and events may be canceled due to inclement weather and other reasons. Please call the park to confirm dates/times prior to your arrival.
