The Department licenses Funeral Establishments, Mortuary Science Licensees, Resident Trainees and Mortuary Science Courtesy Licensees which is regulated under Public Act 299 of 1980, as amended.

License Types

License Type	Description
Funeral Establishment	The company is formed at the state level as a corporation, limited liability company, etc., or the County level as a Sole Proprietorship. Please contact the Corporations Division for more information on how to form a company in Michigan or your local your local County Clerk’s office for a Sole Proprietorship.
Mortuary Science Licensee	An individual issued a license for the practice of mortuary science.
Resident Trainee	An individual who is engaged in learning the practice of embalming or funeral directing or the practice of mortuary science under the instruction and personal supervision of a holder of a license for the practice of mortuary science in this state.
Courtesy License	An individual license as a embalmer, funeral director or mortuary science in the state of Ohio, Indiana or Wisconsin performing the duties under MCL 339.1806a.

Apply For:	If:
Initial Application	You want a new license and: you have never been issued this license type in Michigan; or you have never held a funeral establishment license at this location.
Renewal	Your active license is about to expire, and you wish to continue licensure.
Relicensure	Your license is in a lapsed status.
Reinstatement	Your license is currently suspended or revoked.

Late Renewal Information

The license is considered active until the expiration date printed on the license.
