Responsible for the bureau's budget, fees, internal controls, personnel oversight, performance reporting, document management, promulgation of administrative rules, legislation, publication of the bureau’s newsletter, training approvals, Freedom of Information Act Requests, and providing administrative support to the bureau’s administration and its boards and commissions.

Boiler Division

Responsible for administration and enforcement of the Michigan Boiler Code (MBC) which includes conducting inspections of boiler installations and repairs and in-service inspections of existing boilers. Investigates boiler accidents and violations of the MBC and assures proper boiler permits are issued.

Building Division

Responsible for administration and enforcement of the Michigan Building Code (MBC) and the structural provisions within the Michigan Residential Code by performing inspections and issuing certificates of occupancy. Follows up on violations of the MBC and assures proper building permits are issued.

Compliance Division

Reviews and investigates complaints against electricians, mechanical contractors, plumbers, residential builders, maintenance & alteration contractors, boiler and elevator licensees, mobile home parks and dealers, local governmental code enforcing agencies, and alleged non-compliance to barrier free design requirements.

Responsible for administration and enforcement of the Michigan Electrical Code (MEC) and the electrical provisions of the Michigan Residential Code by conducting inspections of electrical wiring and installations. Follows up on violations of the MEC and assures proper electrical permits are issued.

Responsible for administration and enforcement of the Michigan Elevator Code (MEC) by conducting inspections of elevator installations and alterations as well as annual safety inspections. Investigates elevator accidents and violations of the MEC and assures the proper elevator permits are issued.

 

Responsible for licensing and regulating ski areas and ski lifts. Perform inspections of traveling shows operating in Michigan, and amusement parks and other fixed locations with rides. License statuses can be checked at: https://www.lara.michigan.gov/colaLicVerify/.

Licensing Division

Responsible for determining eligibility of examinees, licensure and registration issuance, and renewals of registrations and licenses under the purview of the bureau. Responsible for annual inspections of mobile home parks, delegation of plan review and inspection authority for schools, and requests for assistance from local enforcing agencies. Responsible for administration and enforcement of the Michigan Mechanical Code (MMC) and the mechanical provisions of the Michigan Residential Code by conducting inspections of mechanical equipment and installations. Office of Land Survey & Remonumentation

Ensures orderly and consistent review of subdivision plats, conducts final review of subdivision plats, administers the statewide program of monumenting and remonumenting the original U.S. government public land survey corners, reviews petitions for the State Boundary Commission. Also affixes and detaches mobile homes from real property.

Responsible for issuing boiler, building, electrical, elevator, mechanical and plumbing permits and Certificates of Occupancy. Permits can be obtained via mail or in-person at our Lansing office. However, permits can also be applied for and status checked expeditiously online at: https://aca3.accela.com/lara/.

 

Responsible for review of boiler, building, electrical, elevator, mechanical, and plumbing plans. Also reviews premanufactured unit plans, compliance assurance (CA) manuals, all barrier free design (BFD) exception requests and mobile home park (MHP) plans, and issues MHP permits to construct. Reviews can be submitted via mail or in-person at our Lansing office. However, reviews can also be submitted expeditiously online at: https://aca3.accela.com/lara/ for all types except BFD exceptions and CA manuals. Statuses can be checked at: https://aca3.accela.com/lara/ for reviews submitted online.
