Genetic Counselor
Overview
Welcome to the Michigan Board of Genetic Counseling website! Our goal is to provide up-to-date information on various topics related to the practice of genetic counselors in Michigan. We hope you find this information helpful and invite you to check out our website often.
Recent legislation effective March 28, 2019 has amended the Michigan Public Health Code (Code), 1978 PA 368. Pursuant to 2018 PA 624, MCL 333.17001, genetic counselor means an individual who is licensed under this part to engage in the practice of genetic counseling.
Effective April 15, 2021, the Department, in consultation with the Board promulgated rules to establish and implement the license program for the practice of genetic counselors. Pursuant to MCL 333.17093, by April 15, 2022, an individual shall not engage in the practice of genetic counseling unless he or she is licensed as a genetic counselor under this part. This website will be updated in the future to include a licensure application along with supporting licensing guides and FAQs.
In an effort to reduce the use of paper, effective January 1, 2022, licenses issued or renewed will only be sent electronically unless a paper copy of the license is requested during the application or renewal process.
