Cosmetology School Inspection Requirements

The premises are fully partitioned from any other activity, business, or dwelling. §1205(1)(b)
All subjects of the curriculum are taught as prescribed. §1205(2)(a); R 38(2));R 61-69
Provisions have been made for the school to be under the daily supervision of a licensed instructor who has at least 3 years’ experience in all services taught at the school. §1205(1)(d)
Possess efficient apparatus and equipment prescribed in rules promulgated by the director that are sufficient for the ready and full teaching of each subject in the curriculum. §1205(2)(b)
Employ or engage at least 1 licensed instructor, who is competent to provide instruction in each subject of its curriculum, for every 20 students. §1205(2)(c)
Display its license for the school of cosmetology and the license of each instructor who works in the school in a prominent place in the school that is visible to the public at all times. §1205(2)(h)
Display a sign in the school that states that services are performed by students of the school. §1205(2)(i)
At the time he or she enrolls in the school, provide to each student a financial contract that states the total cost and all charges involved in the complete course of study. §1205(2)(j)
Properly maintains student records. R 36(1); (2)(a-e)
School shall have seating facilities for patrons; an adequate number of chairs and adequate desk space to meet the needs of each student attending; if services are performed on the public, an adequate amount of equipment, supplies, and tools necessary for performing services on patrons in compliance with the requirements under part 4 of the rules; shampoo bowls in classroom other than the clinic classroom, unless a limited school of electrology; if services are not performed on the public, an adequate amount of equipment, supplies, and tools necessary for providing the theory hour and practical training offered on the premises. An adequate supply of running hot and cold water. Adequate ventilation to prevent the concentration of chemical vapors and strong odors. R 71(1)(a-b)
Covered containers for holding used towels, capes, and neck strips. Towels, capes, and neck strips used on a patron disposed in a container for used items and laundered appropriately. R 71(1)(c); R 71(2)(f); R 71a(4)
Covered waste containers that are large enough to contain one day’s accumulation of waste materials. Waste containers are disinfected at least once every 24 hours or lined with a plastic bag that is disposed of each time the waste container is emptied. Dispose of all single-use tools and supplies after use on a patron. R 71(1)(f); R71(2)(c-d), R71b(f)
At least 1 multi-purpose fire extinguisher that is labeled by the manufacturer as suitable for use on class a, b, and c fires within 20 feet of where an open flame is used. R71(1)(g)
Have and maintain at least 1 first aid kit labeled as meeting the ANSI/ISEA standards. R 71(1)(h)
Chair, bed, table, headrest, or other station used for providing services to patrons is made of, or covered in, a non-porous material that can be disinfected. R 71(1)(i)
Maintain all areas in a safe and sanitary condition. R71(2)(a)
Dispose of vaporous chemical waste materials pursuant to the manufacturer's recommendations. R71(2)(b)
Store clean nonelectrical tools and supplies in covered containers and separate from used tools and supplies. R71(2)(e)
All waste materials, but not limited to, hair clippings, paper, and tissues, and single-use tools must be disposed of in a covered waste container. Once hair care services are completed on a patron, remove any hair clippings from the floor. R71(2)(g); R71(b)(g)
Follow disinfecting and sterilizing requirements. R 71a(1-3)(5)(7-11)
All semi-solid substances, including, but not limited to, waxes, creams, lotions, oils, and powders must be stored in a covered container and removed with clean sanitary spatulas or dispensed from a shaker dispenser. R 71a(6)

Not allow a member of the public to drink from a water source used for mixing chemicals. R 79g(k)
