October 11, 2019 – The Dept. of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) has served an order summarily suspending the massage therapist license of Jeffry Warren Knapp of Traverse City for allegations of sexual misconduct with patients. In conjunction with the Department of the Attorney General, LARA also served Knapp with an accompanying administrative complaint that alleges the nature of the sexual misconduct.
“LARA will remain focused on protecting Michigan patients by holding health care professionals responsible when they violate the law,” LARA Director Orlene Hawks said. “Our collaboration with Attorney General Nessel’s office resulted in the necessary suspension of the massage therapist’s license to provide immediate protection to the health, safety and welfare of the public.”
“I am grateful for the continued partnership between our office and LARA that allows us to take swift and decisive actions to protect the public from potential harm," Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said. "We take all allegations of inappropriate sexual contact seriously and will work to ensure those who abuse their powers as licensed professionals are held accountable."
The complaint alleges four violations of the Public Health Code:
- Sexual misconduct
- Negligence and a failure to exercise due care
- Failure to conform to minimal standards of professional practice
- Lack of good moral character
The Michigan Public Health Code provides for summary suspension of professional licenses when the public health, safety, or welfare requires emergency action.
LARA encourages all concerned residents, patients, parents and peers to file complaints against licensed health professionals who may allegedly be risking public health, safety or welfare.
