LANSING, MI – The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), through its Corporations, Securities & Commercial Licensing Bureau, has issued a Notice and Order to Cease and Desist against Legacy Cremation Services LLC, effective May 6, 2025, for engaging in the practice of mortuary science without proper licensure, as required under Michigan’s Occupational Code.
The order was affirmed following a formal administrative hearing held before the Michigan Office of Administrative Hearings and Rules (MOAHR) on January 8, 2026.
Legacy Cremation Services LLC, a Colorado-based company, advertised direct cremation and funeral services to Michigan consumers through its website www.legacycremationservices.com, despite not being licensed to operate in the state. This matter came to LARA’s attention after the department received a complaint from an anonymous source.
Under Michigan’s Occupational Code, both individuals and business entities that engage in the practice of mortuary science must be properly licensed before offering or providing services in the state. Legacy Cremation Services LLC has never held, nor applied for, a mortuary science license in Michigan.
LARA notes that Legacy Cremation Services LLC has been subject to similar administrative actions related to unlicensed activity in other states, including Tennessee, Florida, Oregon, North Carolina, Colorado, Iowa, and Georgia.
Citizens are encouraged to verify licensure before arranging services. Licensure status may be confirmed by contacting LARA at (517) 241-9221 or by emailing CSCLonline@michigan.gov. Information on how to file a complaint against a mortuary science establishment or practitioner is available at www.michigan.gov/cscl by selecting "File a Complaint with MiCLEAR" under Online Services.
