MRS helps customer find and reach career goal
November 26, 2025
Cris had not considered employment options while in high school. But when he learned about Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) before he graduated, he knew they could help him identify a job goal and the training he needed to reach it.
After receiving vocational guidance and conducting informational interviews, Cris decided that working in retail would be the best fit for him. MRS helped Cris attend the Michigan Career & Technical Institute (MCTI), where he was attracted to the customer service side of the industry and was always encouraged by MCTI’s staff.
After completing his vocational training at MCTI, Cris continued to work with MRS on job preparation that eventually resulted in him getting hired by Meijer. Cris was initially hired as a courtesy clerk and very shortly promoted to a cashier.
Although cashiering was a part of his training at MCTI, Cris felt he needed additional site-specific training to be successful at work. With additional job coaching from MRS, Cris quickly mastered his new essential job functions.
Although Cris sometimes faces challenges at work — especially when a customer gets upset when their credit card isn’t working — Cris’ training has taught him to remain calm, solve problems and ask for assistance when he needs it.
“There are no shortcuts to success,” shared Cris.
