The right supports empower MRS customer to make a difference in the lives of others
April 01, 2026
Vanessa first came to Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) carrying both hope and discouragement. Living with severe spinal stenosis, she faced significant physical barriers that made traditional employment extremely difficult. Long periods of standing or sitting caused intense pain, limiting the type of work she could realistically pursue.
Vanessa had previously worked at a local grocery store, but the long hours on her feet quickly became unbearable. Despite her determination, the physical strain made it impossible to continue. Feeling discouraged but not defeated, Vanessa began considering remote work as a more sustainable option.
With the support of her MRS counselor, Vanessa was provided with comprehensive job readiness training. She worked diligently to build a strong resume and earned multiple certifications in computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office and customer service credentials. These certifications strengthened her qualifications and helped her stand out in the competitive remote job market.
During her training, Vanessa shared concerns about her ability to sit comfortably for extended periods. She had been completing coursework at her dining room table, which caused significant discomfort and increased back pain. Recognizing this barrier, MRS arranged for an occupational therapist to evaluate her home workspace. Based on professional recommendations, Vanessa was provided with ergonomic equipment including a proper desk, computer, monitor, task chair, and additional support designed to improve posture and reduce strain. These adjustments significantly increased her comfort and endurance, allowing her to fully participate in training and prepare for employment.
Vanessa then completed an On-the-Job Experience, gaining real-time remote work experience. She excelled during this period, demonstrating strong communication skills, reliability and professionalism.
In addition, MRS provided Vanessa with benefits counseling to ensure she understood how employment would impact her benefits and how to properly report wages, giving her confidence and clarity as she moved toward competitive employment.
"My disability is part of my life. It affects how I move, how I work, and how I show up every day,” shared Vanessa. “It has never stopped me. It taught me how to be resourceful, how to communicate clearly, and to keep going when things felt impossible. If anything, it has taught me how strong I really am."
Vanessa now works remotely part-time in an administrative role, connecting with patients via phone and providing them with support, resources and encouragement. In this role, Vanessa not only earns income but also makes a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
"I want to personally thank my MRS counselor for all of the support and guidance,” Vanessa said. “She helped me see possibilities when I was overwhelmed."
Through determination, the right supports and a collaborative partnership with MRS, Vanessa turned significant barriers into meaningful opportunity. Today, Vanessa is not only successfully employed – she is also using her lived experience to uplift others, proving that with the right support, possibility can replace discouragement.
