Michigan Employer Advisor: July 2026

Employers urged to activate MiUI accounts

The UIA is reminding all employers who have not yet activated their MiUI accounts to do so as soon as possible. An active MiUI account is essential for performing all MiUI for Tax functions and for granting access to any Third- Party Administrators (TPAs) you may work with.

Activating your account now is especially important as the UIA prepares to launch MiUI for Benefits later this year. Employers who use a TPA for benefits will also need to ensure their TPA has access to their MiUI account once the system goes live.

Failing to activate your account — or failing to grant access to your TPAs — could create challenges when benefits functions launch. Without proper access, employers may miss opportunities to protest or appeal benefit charges and could end up paying benefits they may have intended to contest.

To get started with MiUI account activation, check out MiUI University. The website gives you instructions on how to find your activation code, initiateyour account, and grant account access to TPAs.

Need to reactivate? If you need to reactive your account, or aren’t sure if your MiUI account is active, check out the MiUI FAQs page for guidance.

Wage reports due soon: Please file on time!

The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) is reminding employers that quarterly wage/tax reports are due Monday, July 27.

The agency urges businesses to file promptly in MiUI to avoid penalties and ensure their accounts remain in good standing. UIA notes three key requirements for employers as the deadline approaches:

  • A quarterly wage/tax report must be filed every quarter, even if the employer has no payroll or is unable to make a payment.
  • Reports and payments must be submitted accurately and on time — late or incomplete filings may result in penalty and interest charges.
  • Employers can sign up for the Michigan Employer Advisor or check out the blog to receive helpful payment reminders and updates.

New July laws reminder: Understand what's changing with unemployment

Several changes to Michigan’s unemployment law — the Michigan Employment Security (MES) Act — take effect this month.

These changes will affect employers and the support they can offer their employees. Here are a few of the most impactful changes:

  • UIA’s Work Share Program is expanding to give employers more flexibility when they need to reduce employee hours due to economic challenges but want to avoid layoffs.
  • Employers involved in unemployment cases before an administrative law judge (ALJ) with multiple related hearings can have them consolidated into one.
  • Employers will not be charged for benefits paid to workers who leave their jobs due to domestic violence/abuse. Benefits for workers eligible under this new law will instead be charged to the nonchargeable benefits account.

The UIA encourages you to understand everything that's changing, when the changes take effect, and how they may affect you.

Introducing UIA’s New Issue Tracker

A screenshot of the UIA Tax Issue Tracker. There is a drop down box that reads, "What type of issue are you experiencing?"

We are pleased to announce an improvement to how employers and TPAs request MiUI tax, technical, and navigational assistance from our Office of Employer Ombudsman (OEO).

The new Tax Issue Tracker replaces the UIA-MiUIEmployerSupport@michigan.gov email inbox. If you send an email to that address, you will be directed to use the tracker or contact OEO by phone at 855-484-2636, Option 4.

The tracker provides a tracking number that helps improve communication between employers/TPAs and OEO.

Effective immediately, employers and TPAs can submit their questions or issues through the new tracker.

Instead of sending an email, please visit the UIA Tax Issue Tracker at: Employer – TPA Issue Tracker. After submitting your request, a tracking number will be generated so you can monitor its status.

Other help available

In addition to MiUI tax-related questions, the Issue Tracker can assist with MiLogin and MiWAM issues, website error messages, reporting concerns, payment issues, and other support needs.

This enhancement is another step toward providing more efficient and responsive customer service. We appreciate your support as we transition to this new process.

MiUI for Benefits: New web resources up to support workers before transition

The UIA thanks employers and TPAs for their continued use of MiUI for Tax and support of the system as anticipation grows for the launch of MiUI for Benefits.

The benefits portion of the system is still expected to go live this year.

While development continues, the UIA encourages users to explore MiUI University for the latest updates and training materials. New content is now appearing in the MiUI Resources for Workers section, offering early guidance to individuals who will use the system once it launches. Employers and TPAs are encouraged to share this information widely — not only with workers and claimants, but also with labor unions, advocacy groups, and other organizations that support them.

To keep stakeholders informed, UIA maintains the Employer Advisor Blog, where you can access current and past editions of the Employer Advisor Newsletter. You can also follow the MiUI Unemployment Update Blog, which shares the latest news for workers, claimants, and those who support them.

Workers, current claimants, and anyone interested in learning more about MiUI for Benefits can sign up for regular updates. With MiUI for Benefits on the horizon, UIA remains committed to preparing Michigan’s employers, TPAs, and workers for a smooth transition. More updates will be shared as the launch approaches.
