What employers, TPAs can do now to ensure a successful transition
With MiUI’s benefits functionality launching Monday, Nov. 9, employers can take a few simple steps now to ensure a smooth transition for themselves and any third party administrators (TPAs).
Two benefits related roles — Edit Claims Forms Mailing and Edit Benefit Charges — are available to assign today, giving employers and TPAs early access to the permissions they’ll need once the system goes live. These roles allow users to submit or update separation information, review benefit charges and protest charges on an employer’s account.
Some TPAs who already have tax related permissions in MiUI may not have been automatically granted these new benefits roles. Employers are encouraged to review role assignments and update them as needed.
Getting these roles in place now helps avoid delays and is especially important for employers who use separate TPAs for tax and benefits functions.
UIA reminds employers that the agency does not send unsolicited text messages under any circumstances.
Recently, a scammer attempted to convince a Michigan resident to pay $105 to “release” $4,000 in UIA benefits, falsely claiming to be a UIA human resources manager and even providing a bogus employee number.

During layoffs, closures, or other major workforce disruptions, UIA teams have stepped in to help employers and workers understand the unemployment insurance filing process and navigate what can be an uncertain time.

Efforts included recent work in Sturgis, Cadillac, and Bay City, where UIA staff guided affected employers and workers through next steps and answered questions about benefits.

Rapid Response itself is a statewide service led by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity’s Workforce Development team (LEO WD). Working closely with Michigan Works!, the program helps employers plan transitions, connect employees to reemployment services, and explore ways to reduce or even prevent layoffs. The UIA has launched the MiUI Unemployment Update Newsletter, designed to keep stakeholders informed about benefit functions in MiUI ahead of the Nov. 9 launch.
This new newsletter highlights key updates for organizations such as labor unions, trade associations, nonprofits, advocacy groups, workers, and those receiving unemployment benefits.
Like the Employer Advisor Newsletter, each edition will provide timely benefits-related updates, useful resources, and important reminders to support those who are receiving temporary jobless benefits.
UIA’s public Economic Dashboard, first launched in May 2024, has been updated to strengthen its role as a tool for guiding policy decisions aimed at improving service for Michigan’s employers and workers.
The dashboard continues to provide insight into unemployment insurance trends across the state, helping users better understand how unemployment affects industries, occupations, and communities.
The UIA routinely evaluates the dashboard to identify ways to deepen the data and enhance public understanding. The latest review resulted in several updates that expand the scope and clarity of the information available.
To support employers and third-party administrators (TPA), the UIA publishes the MiUI Minute — a quick, reliable source for high-priority updates about the agency's new modern, user-friendly computer system.
