MiUI Minute: Issue 39

The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) is transitioning to a new unemployment tax and benefits system called MiUI, which will replace the current Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM). MiUI is being launched in two parts, with Tax functions now live, and Benefits functions scheduled to be available beginning November 9.

In this issue of the MiUI Minute, we’re providing important information on changes to the Work Share Program when MiUI launches benefits functions. Find past editions of the MiUI Minute at MiUI University.

Work Share and MiUI

Informing Employees to File an Unemployment Insurance Claim

When MiUI with benefits launches on Monday, November 9, 2026, workers covered by a Work Share plan and who receive unemployment benefits will begin completing weekly Work Share certifications along with their employers. To do this, employees will first need to file a standard unemployment insurance claim.

Workers without an active standard unemployment insurance claim are not automatically informed when an employer creates a Work Share plan. Employers are expected to tell their employees when the plan has been created so they know to file a claim.

Employer Eligibility for Work Share

  • To be eligible to apply for Work Share, employers must:
  • Have a positive reserve in their experience accounts.
  • Have paid wages for at least 12 of the previous quarters.
  • Not have a UIA tax delinquency.
  • Not have any missing or incomplete quarterly unemployment tax reports.
  • Be an active employer for 12 consecutive quarters.
  • Not be a seasonal, temporary, or intermittent employer.

Employee Eligibility for Work Share

  • Employers approved for Work Share can add eligible employees to their plan. For an employee to be eligible for Work Share benefits, they must:
  • Be included in the employer’s approved Work Share plan.
  • Have filed a standard unemployment insurance claim and be eligible for benefits.
  • Work the reduced hours as specified in the Work Share plan.
  • Not be included in two or more overlapping Work Share plans.
