Unemployment Update #6

The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) is transitioning to a new unemployment tax and benefits system called MiUI, which will replace the current Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM). MiUI is being launched in two parts, with Tax functions now live, and Benefits functions scheduled to be available starting November 9.

In this issue of the MiUI Unemployment Update, we’re sharing details about changes in the Work Share Program when MiUI goes live.

Work Share and MiUI

When MiUI for Benefits launches on Monday, November 9, 2026, workers who receive benefits will begin completing weekly Work Share certifications along with their employers. To do this, an employee will need to file a standard unemployment insurance claim before collecting benefits.

Workers without an active standard unemployment insurance claim are not automatically informed when an employer creates a Work Share plan, so the employer is expected to let their employees know when the plan has been created. That way, their workers are aware of their eligibility to file a claim.

Employees will see a pop-up when they certify for benefits alerting them that a week is eligible for Work Share. They can submit their certification by clicking the Certify button on the pop-up, or by going to My Claim > Work Share > Submit Weekly Certification from the left navigation menu.

What is Work Share?

The Work Share Program enables employers to reduce employee hours without laying off their trained and experienced workforce. Workers who qualify for benefits can then receive partial unemployment payments to offset some of their lost wages.

Employers meeting the necessary criteria can apply for Work Share and create Work Share plans that include eligible employees. For an employee to be eligible for Work Share plan benefits, they must:

• Be included in the employer’s approved Work Share plan.
• Have filed an initial standard unemployment insurance claim and be eligible for benefits.
• Work the reduced hours as specified in the Work Share plan.
• Not be included in two or more overlapping Work Share plans.
