Seasonal positions in the Wildlife Division

Looking for a seasonal job in Michigan's great outdoors? Join our Wildlife Team!

The Wildlife Division hires many seasonal employees in the spring and summer, and fall and winter months to work at the various locations throughout the state, including State Field Offices, DNR Customer Service Centers, and the State Game Areas. Seasonal staff help in several areas, such as:

  • Spring/Summer
    • Assisting with wildlife habitat maintenance and improvement, which may include cutting clearings and adjusting water levels.
    • Mowing, landscaping and facility maintenance duties.
    • Handling tasks related to wildlife surveys, nuisance animal control and equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Fall
    • Assisting with chronic wasting disease surveillance and collection of bio data for the deer season.
    • Pre-registering waterfowl hunters and conducting drawings for waterfowl hunting areas.
    • Entering database information and assisting hunters with questions.

            • Description: Assist with maintaining the State Game Area in Allegan County. Tasks may include habitat maintenance such as mowing of fields or treatment of invasive species, operation of heavy equipment and tractors with implements, vehicle barrier installation/maintenance, maintaining shooting range, office cleaning, snow removal, lawn care, trash removal, sign posting, equipment/building maintenance, waterfowl banding, wildlife sample collection, GPS Mapping, and other duties as assigned. Worker will also assist with the issuing and reissuing of hunting permits for the managed goose hunt at the Fennville Farm.;

            Selection criteria for positions in the Southwest Lower Peninsula

            Required

            • Education typically acquired through the completion of high school.
            • No specific amount or type of experience is required.
            • Possess a valid driver’s license.
            • May be required to have a medical examiner’s certification (health card) as an employee that will operate a vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight rating (GVWr) of 10,001 pounds or more, or a combination vehicle with a Gross Combination weight rating (GCWr) of 10,001 pounds or more. The cost of the medical examination will be covered by the State of Michigan.
            • May be assigned duties that require the application of pesticides, which may require certification or registration as a pesticide applicator in compliance with the Pesticide Control Act of 1976.

            Desired

            • Education: Possession of or working towards a degree in Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biologist, or a related field.
            • Flexibility to work various hours and dates, up to 40 hours per week, including some weekends.
            • Ability to work independently.
            • Ability to communicate well with co-workers and the public.
            • Knowledge pertaining to Michigan hunting and fishing regulations.
            • Knowledge of the safe use of hand and power tools.
            • Experience operating and maintaining chainsaws.
            • Knowledge or experience relating to wildlife or DNR programs.
            • Knowledge and ability to identify Michigan flora and fauna.
            • Ability to accurately read a map.
            • General office work, including basic computer knowledge, photocopying, answering telephones, etc.
            • Medical Examiner’s Certificate.

            Screening criteria

            • Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.
            • Possess a valid driver’s license.
            • Experience interacting with customers or the public.
            • Experience operating hand and power tools.
            • Experience operating and maintaining chainsaws.
            • Possession of or working towards a degree in Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biologist, or a related field.
            • Experience working for any wildlife related agency.
            • Experience identifying Michigan flora and fauna.
            • Pesticide certification.
            • Possession of a Medical Examiner’s Certificate.

The employee will have to work with maps, inspect deer teeth to determine age, enter data in handheld device, and remove head and/or skull cap with antlers using a saw and then tag the jaw of each head collected. Employees will be trained on how to operate handheld device and on aging deer. Employees will be expected to interact with hunters and be able to answer questions if needed. Maintain and keep clean and organized the deer check shed as well as stocked with PPEs. This employee will make sure handheld devices are charged up, and all tools are working properly. Workers may have to download updates and upload data from the handheld devices to the Wildmobile database. Workers may also collect deer heads from other regional offices and deliver to the MSU Diagnostic lab for testing.

              Fish Point State Wildlife Area, 7750 Ringle Rd., Unionville, MI 48767

Job duties may include pre-registering hunters, conducting drawings for hunting areas, issuing permits, handling money, record keeping, cleaning office/restrooms, building/equipment maintenance and assisting hunters. Other duties may include identifying, aging, and sexing of harvested deer and waterfowl, assessing the condition of wildlife, and collecting other biological or hunter information.

              • Description: Assist with the collection of deer heads for Chronic Wasting Disease & Bovine Tuberculosis surveillance and biological data for 2021 deer season. The employee will have to work with maps, inspect deer teeth to determine age, enter data in handheld device, and remove and/or skull cap with antlers using a saw then tag the jaw of each head collected. May also collect deer heads from other regional offices and deliver heads to MSU Diagnostic Lab for testing. Also, will assist with duck draw/check operations throughout regular waterfowl season including registering hunters, performing lottery draw, assigning zone selections, reading rules, performing bag checks after AM hunts, and keeping station organized and clean. Employee will be expected to interact with hunters and answer questions. Maintain and keep clean organized the deer check trailer/check station and keep stocked with PPE. Make sure handheld devices are charged up and all tools working properly. May have to download updates and upload data from the handheld devices to Wildmobile Database.

              • Description: Positions require the ability to work a varied 40 hour per week schedule that may include weekends, and work shifts from 8am – 5pm or 12pm to 8 pm. At times, these positions may be unsupervised or have limited supervision. Job duties may include pre-registering hunters, conducting drawings for hunting areas, issuing permits, record keeping, and assisting hunters. Other duties may include identifying, aging, and sexing of harvested deer and waterfowl, assessing the condition of wildlife, and collecting other biological or hunter information and driving to pick up locations for collected deer samples.

              • Up to 40 hours per week
              • Total Hours: Up to 360 per person during the season
              • Pay rate: $18.47 per hour
              • Description: Positions require the ability to work a varied 40 hour per week schedule that may include weekends, and work shifts from 4am – 12 noon or 8am – 4pm.  At times, these positions may be unsupervised or have limited supervision. Job duties will include pre-registering waterfowl hunters, conducting drawings for waterfowl hunting areas, issuing trapping permits, record keeping including data collection, organization, and entry, and assisting hunters with questions. Employees will be expected to interact with hunters and be able to answer questions if needed. Other duties will include assisting with waterfowl refuge counts, completing habitat or wetland management work, identifying, aging, and sexing of harvested deer and waterfowl, assessing the condition of wildlife, and collecting other biological or hunter information to enter electronic databases.  Positions may be required to assist at other offices as needed.
