Join June 23 virtual meeting for Fort Wilkins Historic State Park

Is there anything you especially love or would like to experience at Fort Wilkins Historic State Park?

Join the Michigan Department of Natural Resources at a virtual public meeting 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, June 23, to learn about and share feedback on a new draft general management plan for this park in Keweenaw County.

DNR staff will present an overview of the draft plan, proposed park improvements and the planning process, followed by an opportunity for people to ask questions and provide comment. Advance registration is required.

For those unable to attend, the meeting will be recorded and posted online approximately one week after the event. An interactive public input survey also is available through July 13 for people to provide feedback.

The DNR uses general management plans to define long-range planning and management strategies that protect the resources of state parks while addressing recreation and education needs and opportunities.

Fort Wilkins Historic State Park is set along Lake Superior on the northern tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. It features a modern campground, trails, two 1860s lighthouses and much more. Central to the park is a restored historical fort, including 19 buildings, 12 of which are original log and frame structures dating to the 1840s, and a living-history program provided by the Michigan History Center.

Keweenaw Point state lands

The DNR is also working on a draft general management plan for current and future state-managed lands south and east of Fort Wilkins Historic State Park. These lands include DNR-managed state forest lands and a portion of The Nature Conservancy-owned Keweenaw Heartlands. A timeline for release of this draft plan is not yet available.
