DNR hosts Hunters of Color event in Flint Saturday

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources invites new, interested or experienced hunters to attend the annual Hunters of Color event Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mott Park Recreation Area, located at 2401 Nolen Drive in Flint.

“Come out and learn more about hunting – from how to get started to expanding your skills – and meet others from a diverse community of hunters,” said Kathy Garland, DNR archery education coordinator.

Hunting is not only a valuable skill that provides healthy food and contributes to conserving natural resources, it is an integral part of Michigan's story that has been shared across generations. But not everyone has had the same opportunity to discover this tradition due to a variety of factors, such as gender, ethnicity and living in more urban areas where access to hunting opportunities is significantly reduced.

Through efforts like this event, the DNR is working to change that and ensure greater awareness of hunting for everyone, including Black, indigenous and people of color.

All are welcome, and no experience is required. The walk-through event will include:

  • Live demos
  • Archery and pellet gun shooting
  • Giveaways and raffles
  • Hunter education information
  • Vendors
  • Food trucks
  • And much more.
