Detroit Auto Show 5K this weekend, Saturday, Jan. 17

There are still spots open for this weekend’s Detroit Auto Show 5K, an event that helps support the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Outdoor Adventure Center in the Motor City.

Get moving in the new year – invite your family and friends to join, too! – by signing up for this race that begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Huntington Place, Detroit's riverfront convention center formerly known as Cobo Hall. The route starts and finishes outside the doors of the Detroit Auto Show and takes runners and walkers along the Detroit Riverfront.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Detroit Auto Show for partnering with the DNR and allowing us to incorporate their iconic branding into an event that supports the Outdoor Adventure Center,” said Michelle O’Kelly, race director and fund developer for the DNR Parks and Recreation Division. “The collaboration helps us introduce new audiences to outdoor recreation and hands-on learning, right in the heart of Detroit.”

With about 150 spots remaining, O’Kelly expects the race to fill soon. Registration will close once the event reaches its cap of 550 participants.

Event details

  • Registration remains open through the morning of the race, Jan. 17 (unless the cap is reached). Early packet pickup is 4 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at the Outdoor Adventure Center, a DNR-run, hands-on museum and education center along the Detroit riverfront. Race day packet pickup will take place one hour prior to the race start time at Huntington Place.
  • Each finisher receives a long-sleeve lightweight hoodie, commemorative bib and finisher's medal.
  • The DNR, the Detroit Auto Show and the Friends of the Outdoor Adventure Center are behind this race. All proceeds will directly support exhibit upgrades at the OAC, helping the DNR keep the space current and meaningful for the community.

Post-race event at the OAC

After crossing the finish line and refueling, race participants (and spectators) are invited to visit the Outdoor Adventure Center for Wheel Talk: The Stories that Drove the Motor City, taking place 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

“Join the OAC team and local partners to celebrate the automobile heritage of the Motor City,” said Emily Grant, who oversees education, events and camps at the Outdoor Adventure Center. “We’ll discover the people and ideas that put the world on wheels, and why Michigan was especially suited to drive the automobile industry.”

Guests will:

  • Get a hands-on experience with a custom-built rock crawler and Razor off-road riding vehicle and view a custom Jeep Gladiator.
  • Gain experience in automotive design and theory with professional designers, answering the question, what does the park ranger of the future need to do their job?
  • Discover the impact of automobile pollution on the Detroit River.
  • Earn a Junior Ranger badge with the Motor Cities National Heritage Area.
