DNR, DTE Energy Foundation, ReLeaf Michigan award grant funding to 27 communities to grow Michigan’s tree canopy

More than two dozen communities and organizations across the state were awarded grants from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, DTE Energy Foundation and ReLeaf Michigan.

The recipients will share in $98,400 in grant funding and technical assistance to expand tree canopy and strengthen local green infrastructure.

More than 900 trees will be planted in public spaces – including streets, parks and community gathering areas – in fall 2026 and spring 2027 as part of these funded projects. This marks the 30th year the DNR has collaborated with DTE Energy Foundation and ReLeaf Michigan to invest in Michigan’s urban and community forests.

“Across the state, we continue to see how access to healthy trees can improve public health and quality of life,” said Kerry Gray, DNR Urban and Community Forestry Program grant specialist. “This funding helps grant recipients invest in the right trees in the right places, creating greener and more resilient communities.”

The DTE Foundation funds the statewide program, and it is administered jointly by the DNR and ReLeaf Michigan. The program offers grant support and project technical assistance to ensure successful plantings.

“Trees are one of the most important and lasting investments a community can make,” said Rodney Cole, DTE Foundation president. “Through this longtime partnership, we're helping communities across Michigan expand green spaces, improve quality of life and create benefits that will be enjoyed for generations.”

The program engages communities, schools, nonprofits and local governments in environmental stewardship, neighborhood beautification and responsible tree planting away from utility infrastructure. Applications for the next round of funding will open in summer 2027.

To learn about the UCF program, contact Kevin Sayers at 517-582-3209 or visit Michigan.gov/UCF. Don't forget to pin each tree you plant on the Michigan DNR's MiTrees page to help the DNR reach a goal of 50 million trees planted by 2030.

ReLeaf Michigan is a statewide tree organization that works to educate the public on the value of trees and how to properly select, plant and maintain them.
