Annual review updates Michigan’s state forest road inventory
October 30, 2026
Accurate road maps help connect people to Michigan’s public lands while supporting responsible management of the state’s forest resources
Keeping Michigan’s state forest road maps accurate takes more than updating lines on a map. It requires field assessments, public input and ongoing evaluation of how roads are used and managed across the state’s public lands.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ 2026 state forest road inventory review includes proposed additions, closures and mapping corrections designed to reflect current conditions, address resource protection needs and maintain appropriate access for recreation.
The annual review also provides an opportunity to incorporate feedback from the public and DNR staff who use and manage these roads.
Why are updates needed?
Each year, the DNR conducts a comprehensive review of Michigan’s state forest roads to maintain the quality and accessibility of these routes while ensuring the needs of changing conditions, evolving recreational use and community input are met.
Under Public Act 288 of 2016, off-road vehicle use is allowed on state forest roads unless otherwise designated by the DNR. The law also requires ongoing mapping and inventory of these roads. It’s important to note that this review applies only to state forest roads and does not affect ORV use on other roads, such as those managed by counties or townships.
Proposed updates may include:
- Adding previously unmapped roads or removing roads that no longer exist.
- Changing access for conventional (street-legal) vehicles by opening or closing roads.
- Opening or closing roads to off-road vehicle use.
- Modifying seasonal access on certain roads.
How to share feedback
The DNR encourages the public to review the proposed updates and submit comments by Dec. 1 using one of the following options:
- Online: Visit Michigan.gov/ForestRoads to explore the interactive map or download printable PDFs of the proposed updates.
- Email: Send comments to DNR-RoadInventoryProject@Michigan.gov.
Approved changes
The DNR welcomes public comments during upcoming Michigan Natural Resources Commission meetings in early 2027. The proposed updates will be reviewed at the commission’s January and February meetings, with the DNR director expected to make a final decision at the February meeting.
Updated state forest road maps reflecting public feedback and management input will be published online and take effect April 1, 2027.
