When we returned to the Michigan State Police Training Academy facility Sunday evening, David Greydanus, retired Michigan State Police inspector, conducted a criminal law review session. He covered everything we have learned over the past 18 weeks in criminal law, which prepared us to take our Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards exam Thursday.
Monday, we began in the gym doing bench press, pullups, burpees, reverse lunges and situps. After breakfast, we attended a one-hour class about the Freedom of Information Act with Kelly Hamilton, FOIA supervisor for the DNR Law Enforcement Division. We then practiced scenarios that included collection and preservation of property. After dinner, academy class commander Sgt. Kyle Bucholtz led a lesson about processing property.
Tuesday, we began physical training by running the stairwell, and then went into the weight room where we broke into three groups of five and learned exercises for our biceps and triceps. We also learned exercises like dumbbell bench press, incline dumbbell bench press, and how to deadlift. After breakfast, we had a class about tactical operations, followed by a class on surveillance. After lunch, we learned about operational planning. To finish the night, we completed MURPH, a workout in honor of Navy Seal Lt. Michael Murphy, who died while serving in Afghanistan in 2005. The workout consisted of a 1-mile run followed by 300 squats, 200 pushups, 100 pullups and another 1-mile run.
Wednesday, physical training included yoga and body destroyers. For morning class, we packed up the classroom in preparation for our move to the DNR’s Ralph A. MacMullan Center in Roscommon, where we will train for the final eight weeks of the academy. Once the classroom was all packed up, we took a written firearms exam. We then studied for the MCOLES exam and had a lesson about civil disorder procedures, including different line formations for crowd control. After lunch, we participated in a joint crowd control training with the Michigan State Police at Midland Fairgrounds.
Thursday, we did not have morning physical training, but we used that time to study for our 8 a.m. MCOLES exam – and everyone passed! After lunch, we had a small meeting about our travel expense cards and prepared to head to the RAM Center, where we will spend the next eight weeks. After our meeting we cleaned the MSP training academy and packed our gear.
