CO Mike Haas witnessed a motorcycle operating in front of him without a license plate while patrolling in northern Isabella County. At a stop sign CO Haas activated his lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop. CO Haas witnessed the operator look at him in his rearview mirrors, say something to his juvenile passenger who then leaned into him and held on tight as he accelerated quickly, failing to stop for the CO. After a brief pursuit with the motorcycle traveling over 100 mph, CO Haas slowed down and turned off his lights and sirens discontinuing the pursuit to avoid any further danger to the juvenile passenger. The CO backtracked and located the motorcycle’s tracks and contacted individuals at a nearby residence who identified the subject on the bike. CO Haas investigated the alleged suspect and verified his identity after looking at his Secretary of State photo. It was determined that he had an active arrest warrant out of Kent County, revoked driving privileges, lacked a cycle endorsement, and had previously served time in prison for reckless driving causing death. CO Josh Reed assisted CO Haas later in the day and they attempted to contact the suspect at his residence in Mecosta County. As the COs arrived, they witnessed the subject in his driveway. CO Wes Butler received a call that a squirrel hunter had shot a deer out of season at Muskrat State Game Area. The caller explained that while he was squirrel hunting, he saw two deer run into the tree line where he knew another individual was hunting. Not long after the deer entered the tree line, he heard a gunshot. Following the shot, he heard a loud doe bleat. Moments later, he saw the hunter exiting the tree line. The caller stated that when the suspect saw him, he appeared very nervous. The suspect immediately began walking back to his vehicle. When the caller got back to his vehicle, he took photos as the suspect was leaving. The caller took CO Butler back to the wooded area where he initially saw the deer and heard the gunshot. After a few minutes of searching, CO Butler found a freshly killed fawn laying at the bottom of a ridge inside the woods. The deer had a small bullet wound to the neck. The following day, CO Butler went to the suspect’s residence to question him. CO Butler asked the suspect if he was squirrel hunting out at Muskrat State Game Area the day prior. He said, "No.”  CO Butler then confronted the subject with the evidence including photos the complainant provided and the dead deer. COs Brad Silorey and Kris Kiel responded to a vessel in distress call on Lake St. Clair with possible subjects in the water. COs Silorey and Kiel were already preparing their vessel for their patrol that day and were able to set underway in a very short timeframe. The coordinates given were approximately 10 miles south of their location and 3.6 miles offshore. DNR dispatchers were able to quickly coordinate with local law enforcement agencies and the USCG to get a very accurate location. COs Silorey and Kiel, along with the USCG response vessel, located the subjects at the same time and were able to rescue both subjects out of the water. Both subjects were exhausted and appeared to be at the beginning stages of hypothermia. It is estimated that the subjects were in the water for nearly an hour before being found. The subjects were placing race buoys when their propeller became entangled by a line and one subject jumped into the water to free the entanglement. The subject who jumped in had a floatation device, but it appeared to be inadequate and was not properly worn on his body. The subject was unable to reenter his vessel. The second subject called 911, and while attempting to assist the subject in the water, the second subject fell overboard without a PFD. Neither subject was able to re-board the vessel. The COs were able to keep the subject warm with their duty jacket and transport to them Grosse Point Yacht Club for medical attention.
