Becoming an Outdoors Woman: Beginners Backpacking Clinic
Becoming an Outdoors Woman: Beginners Backpacking Clinic
Our Outdoor Skills Academy and Becoming an Outdoors Woman programs are teaming up for an adventure designed exclusively for women who want to learn the basics of backpacking in a supportive, hands-on environment. This clinic is the first step to building confidence in the outdoors and begins with two virtual sessions (Sept. 30 and Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m.) where instructors will guide you through gear selection, packing tips and safety considerations.
Next, on Oct.18, participants will meet at the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center in Cadillac to gear up and head to the beautiful Manistee River Trail in Mesick.
Together, we will hike across the Little Mac Bridge, visit two natural waterfalls, and enjoy sweeping scenic views of northern Michigan during peak fall color season along the Manistee River. This clinic is beginner-friendly, focusing on hiking skills, trail safety and confidence building.
An overnight camping option is available for those who wish to stay along the trail and hike out Sunday morning, while others may choose to complete the hike in one day. Whether you stay overnight or hike through, this will be an unforgettable experience filled with camaraderie, natural beauty and hands-on learning!
Limited to 12 participants.
The cost for the class is $50. To register, go to Michigan.gov/DNRLicenses and click on the "Purchase a license" button. Sign in (using either a username and password or your ID and birthdate), and find the class under the Becoming an Outdoors Woman tab.
A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into Michigan state parks. To make a camping reservation, visit MIDNRReservations.com or call 1-800-447-2757.
