Becoming an Outdoors Woman - Ice Fishing School
Becoming an Outdoors Woman - Ice Fishing School
This winter, Becoming an Outdoors Woman teams up with the Outdoor Skill Academy to host a women-only session of Hard Water School — an intensive, hands-on ice fishing experience that equips anglers of all skill levels with the skills and confidence to conquer the ice.
- February 17 at 6:30 p.m. (via Zoom): Orientation session covering class materials, safety and equipment checklist.
- February 24 at 6:30 p.m. (via Zoom): Q&A session and review of ice conditions, with time for preparation before hitting the ice.
- February 28, 2026 (1:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.): Hands-on ice fishing session at Camp Torenta on Lake Mitchell, where students will rotate through learning stations before practicing independently using the skills learned.
Please note that the Zoom sessions will include participants from the Outdoor Skill Academy and from Becoming an Outdoors Woman. The Feb. 28 session will be only for Becoming an Outdoors Woman participants.
Instruction by pro staffers from Clam Outdoors, HT Enterprises, Vexilar, K-Drill, Fish Bones and more will provide expert instruction on setup, rigging, gear selection, fish location, ice safety, and rules and regulations.
Participants will have the opportunity for hands-on learning on the ice, including one-on-one guidance from professionals. A warming hut, augers and limited shanties will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, though participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment.
This is a family-friendly event, and participants are welcome to stay and fish longer at their leisure. Please note that a valid Michigan fishing license is required. Weather conditions may affect ice-based activities; if necessary, portions of the class will be moved indoors.
Cost is $25, which includes a take-home gift and bait. A limited quantity of loaner rods will be available.
To register for BOW programs, go to Michigan.gov/DNRLicenses and click on the "Purchase a license" button. Sign in (using either a username and password or your ID and birthdate), and find the class under the Becoming an Outdoors Woman tab.
A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into Michigan state parks. To make a camping reservation, visit MIDNRReservations.com or call 1-800-447-2757.
Please Note: Dates occasionally change and events may be canceled due to inclement weather and other reasons. Please call the park to confirm dates/times prior to your arrival.
