Annual report
Overview
This marked the 46th year of managed waterfowl hunting at the Muskegon County Resource Recovery Center (MCRRC) and Muskegon County Wastewater System Goose Management Unit (GMU).
Above-average late summer temperatures and below-average rainfall led into the fall season in the Muskegon area. October, November and December temperatures were all above average. However, fall precipitation and snowfall were near average at the MCRRC.
The Muskegon GMU season began Oct. 15. There were no changes to scheduling, party size or the drawing process in 2024. The regular weekly schedule consisted of an all-day hunt on Tuesday, an afternoon-only hunt on Thursday and both morning and afternoon hunts on Saturday. The last day of the 2024 MCRRC season was Dec. 21.
A promising start to the MCRRC hunt was lost due to harvesting equipment breakdowns, which led to the premature harvest and tillage of the remaining corn crop and standing corn strips by early November. This unplanned change had a very negative effect on the last five weeks of the managed hunting season. The lack of an attractive food source severely limited waterfowl use, hunter trips and hunter success. For the entire season, hunter trips declined by 12 percent (from 334 to 295). Overall, goose harvest increased slightly in 2024 (from 88 to 98 Canada geese), with 81 percent of the harvest occurring in October. Duck hunting was poor throughout the season, dropping from 87 birds in 2023 to 50 in 2024.
