Annual report
Overview
2025 marked the 47th year of managed waterfowl hunting on the Muskegon County Resource Recovery Center (MCRRC) and Goose Management Unit (GMU).
After a successful opener, bluebird days limited hunting success in the early season. December came in with cold temperatures, wind, and snow cover, and waterfowl started moving off the area as the major lagoon began freezing over. Due to maintenance work on the lagoon, the MCRRC reduced water levels by more than 50 percent. This resulted in a rapid freeze up.
The MCRRC also terminated a memorandum of agreement with the DNR for standing corn strips. This reduced cover and waste grain in the fields. Just after harvest, MCRRC staff disked in crop residue and planted cover crops, further reducing bird usage.
Beginning in 2023, all the fields south of M-46 were closed to hunting. Consumers Energy leased this part of the fields for the development of a solar energy farm. The development of the solar energy farm was completed this year, and the fields are expected to be closed for the foreseeable future.
This year’s goose harvest increased from 98 birds in 2024 to 122 in 2025, a 24% increase. The success rate of geese per hunter trip was .72 (The past five-year average is .43 geese). Duck harvest decreased from 50 birds to 23. All the ducks taken this year were mallards. The success rate for ducks (.14 ducks per hunter trip) declined and was below the five-year average of .32 ducks per trip. Hunter trip numbers decreased from 295 trips in 2024 to 169 in 2025.
While the number of hunters has decreased, geese taken per hunter trip increased, which we feel can be attributed to a core group of hunters who have learned to be successful regardless of the conditions. This means fewer hunters with higher success rates.
